Bush Clover Problems: Root Rot, Mites, Dieback and the Weed Risk

Bush clover suffers very little from pests, and nearly every serious problem traces back to wet soil, too much feeding or the plant's own capacity to seed itself around where it should not.

The biggest hazard is the plant itself

The most consequential problem with this genus is not a pest. Several Lespedeza species, sericea lespedeza in particular, are listed noxious weeds in a number of US states and are the target of active control programs across the Great Plains and the Southeast. Ornamental shrub bush clovers set heavy crops of hard, long-lived seed and are flagged as invasive in parts of the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States, where seedlings colonize roadsides, woodland edges and disturbed ground.

Manage that risk deliberately if you grow one in a region where the genus is a concern. Cut the spent flowering stems off after flowering finishes, before the pods dry and harden, and put them in household waste rather than a compost pile that may not get hot enough to kill the seed. Walk the ground within twenty or thirty feet (6 to 9 m) of the plant each spring and pull every seedling. If seedlings are appearing beyond your boundary, or if you back onto unmanaged ground, remove the plant.

Removing an established plant is harder than it looks. Cutting it down alone will not do it; bush clover resprouts vigorously from the crown, which is precisely why it survives grazing and mowing in the wild. You have to dig the crown out entirely, and then keep pulling seedlings from the soil seed bank for several years afterward.

Check your own state and county noxious weed list under the botanical name before planting, propagating or giving away any bush clover. Legal status varies by jurisdiction and changes over time.

Root rot and wet feet: the usual cause of death

Bush clover is a dry-hillside plant, and soil that stays wet is what actually kills it. Waterlogging suffocates the roots and admits soil-borne rot organisms such as Phytophthora, and once the crown is affected the plant does not recover. The pattern is a plant that looks progressively weaker over two or three seasons and then fails to come back one spring.

The symptoms mislead. Yellowing lower leaves, thin sparse growth, shoots wilting in afternoon sun, and reduced flowering all read as thirst, so the natural response is to water more, which accelerates the decline. The diagnostic test is simple: push a finger down two or three inches (5 to 8 cm) at the base. If the soil there is damp and the plant is wilting, the roots are the problem.

Prevention is the only real cure. Plant on a slope, a raised bed or gravelly ground. Set the crown at grade or slightly proud, never below it. Keep mulch pulled a hand's width back from the stems so the crown stays dry and ventilated. If a plant is already declining in heavy ground and is young enough to move, lifting it in late winter to a sharply drained position is worth attempting; on an old plant it is not.

Insects and the damage they do

Insect pressure on bush clover is light, and most of what appears is cosmetic and self-correcting. The exception is spider mite in a hot dry season, which can genuinely weaken a plant, and Japanese beetle in regions where it is established, which can skeletonize the foliage of a whole shrub in a bad year.

Dieback, flopping and shy flowering

Stem dieback in spring is normal, not a disease. In cold regions bush clover behaves as a die-back subshrub: the previous year's stems are killed by winter and regrowth comes entirely from the crown. That is why the plant is cut to four to eight inches (10 to 20 cm) in late winter as routine. Worry only if the crown itself is dead, which shows as no shoots at all by the time other shrubs are well into leaf.

Flopping is a cultural fault with three causes, in order of frequency: too much nitrogen, too little sun, and too much water. All three produce long soft stems that cannot hold themselves. Stop feeding entirely, stop routine watering, and if the plant sits in shade for much of the day, accept that no amount of staking will fix the underlying problem. Support rings installed in spring manage the symptom in a border that is simply tight.

Poor flowering has a fourth cause worth checking before the others: pruning at the wrong time. Bush clover flowers on the current year's growth, so any cut made from late spring onward removes flowering wood. If a plant is healthy, in full sun, unfed, and still not flowering, ask whether it was tidied in summer. If it was not, look at shade encroaching from a tree that has grown since the shrub was planted, which is the slow version of the same problem.

Records that make diagnosis possible

Record the date and the position of the first sign of any problem, together with the weather in the fortnight before. Mite outbreaks follow hot dry spells, aphids follow soft spring growth, mildew follows humid still weather in a crowded planting. One line a year builds a pattern that tells you when to start checking rather than when to start reacting.

For a plant that is declining rather than being eaten, keep a short seasonal note on vigor: number of new stems from the crown in spring, finished height, and how much dead wood you removed at the hard cut. A drainage problem shows in that sequence as a steady fall in stem count and a steady rise in dead wood, one or two years before the plant visibly fails, which is while it can still be moved.

Where the genus seeds around, log the seedling count and the furthest distance you found one from the parent, each spring. That number is the honest measure of whether you are containing the plant or losing control of it, and it is the basis for deciding to remove the shrub before the decision is made for you.
