Overview

Early Sunglow is the corn to sow when you want the first ears of the year. A yellow standard sugary (su) hybrid from Charter dating to 1956, it ripens in roughly 62 to 68 days and will germinate in soil as cool as 55F, which lets it go in a week or two ahead of most hybrids. The plants are short, around 4.5 to 6 feet, so they resist wind damage and fit a small plot. Ears are modest at 6 to 7 inches with 12 to 14 rows of tender yellow kernels and a gentle, old-fashioned sweetness rather than the intense sugar of supersweet types. Sow an inch deep in a block, feed at planting and again at knee height. Cook it promptly, since su corn turns starchy fast after picking. Ideal for short-season gardens and for the first sowing of a succession.
