The aim is to delay it, not to prevent it
Getting a cucumber crop through the season with no disease at all is close to impossible in a home garden. The realistic aim is to push the outbreak past the peak of picking so the plant keeps its leaves long enough to finish the crop. Once you frame it that way, the priorities become obvious.
On that basis, airflow beats sprays. Do not crowd the plants, keep the lowest joints clear, and strip lower leaves on a schedule. These get described as training jobs, but in practice they are your disease control.
- Do not crowd the plants Below 18 inches (45 cm) the lower leaves stop drying out as soon as the weather turns wet. Squeezing in extra plants turns directly into an early outbreak.
- Keep the bottom foot clear Simply having no leaves or fruit in the lowest foot (30 cm) stops soil splashing onto foliage and noticeably delays the first downy mildew.
- Strip on a schedule, not in reaction Take lower leaves off little and often as you pick, rather than waiting for disease. Build it into the routine rather than treating it as a remedy.
What to watch for changes through the season
The points at which the threat changes move about from year to year. The start and end of your wet season are the most reliable signals for switching what you are looking for.

Powdery mildew starts with drought and a tired plant
Powdery mildew shows as white, floury patches on the upper surface of the leaves, working up from the bottom of the plant. It is often assumed to be a wet weather disease, but it actually takes hold when the soil is on the dry side and the plant is short of food. Keeping the water and the feed going is itself the prevention.
Remove affected leaves as soon as you see them and take them off the plot. Caught at a few leaves, you can stop it spreading. Once it is on a third of the foliage, switch from removing to keeping: strip too hard and the fruit will not fill, so feed and water to push out new leaves instead.
- While it is only a few leaves Take the affected leaves off the plot and review the watering and feeding at the same time. At this stage that usually stops it.
- Once a third of the leaves are affected Stop removing. Losing too much leaf means the fruit will not fill, so feed and water to bring on new growth and keep picking.
- Once the whole plant is covered That plant will not recover. Move to the second batch or an autumn sowing, and clear the diseased material away completely.
Handling a diseased leaf and then a healthy one spreads it. Finish removing the diseased leaves before you move on to training the next plant.
Downy mildew comes in with humidity and soil splash
Downy mildew shows as yellow patches on the lower leaves, squared off by the leaf veins. It spreads fast in prolonged wet weather, driven by soil splashing up from the ground. Straw or plastic mulch to stop the splash delays the first outbreak considerably.
Unlike powdery mildew, downy mildew kills the leaf: it browns off and the plant does not come back. Remove the first few affected leaves and from then on make a habit of inspecting the day after rain. A plant short of nitrogen loses ground faster.

White powder means the dry side of the problem, yellow patches boxed in by veins means the wet side. That one distinction reverses what you should do next.
Pests: early damage, and what they carry
With all three, the damage you can see is less important than what happens next. Beetles cost you a growing point, aphids bring virus, and mites arrive when the plant is already stressed by drought.
- Cucumber beetles They chew round holes in the leaves. A young plant that loses its growing point does not recover, so covering with row cover until the plant is established is the most reliable answer.
- Aphids They cluster on shoot tips and leaf undersides. The sap they take matters less than the mosaic virus they carry. They prefer soft, overfed growth, so review your feeding at the same time.
- Spider mites In hot, dry spells they colonise the undersides of leaves and you see fine pale stippling on the upper surface. Wetting the undersides and mulching to cool the soil are the prevention.
If you do spray
Spraying into a dense canopy does not work. Take out the diseased and old leaves first so the spray can reach the undersides. Powdery mildew lives on the upper surface, downy mildew and mites on the underside, so aim accordingly.
Every product has rules about how many times it may be used on cucumbers and how long before harvest. Cucumbers are picked daily, so unless you choose something with a very short pre-harvest interval you will find you cannot use it during the season at all. Check before you buy, and follow the label for your country.
Using the same chemical group repeatedly stops it working. Keep two products from different groups and alternate them.
