The sap is the hazard that matters most
Dumb cane is named for what its sap does to a mouth. Every part of the plant contains bundles of needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals held under pressure, and chewing a leaf fires them into the soft tissue of the lips, tongue and throat. The reaction is immediate: burning pain, heavy drooling, and swelling that can make speaking and swallowing difficult and lasts anywhere from several hours to several days.
Treat this as a household safety matter rather than a plant care detail. Keep the plant genuinely out of reach of small children and pets, wear gloves whenever you cut it, and never leave offcuts on a table or in an open bin. If sap gets on skin, wash it off promptly. If it gets in an eye, flush with running water for fifteen minutes and get medical advice, because the crystals can abrade the cornea. If anyone chews a leaf, rinse the mouth, give cold water or milk, and call a doctor or a vet; do not induce vomiting.

Serious airway swelling is rare but it is the reason to call rather than wait. Any difficulty breathing or swallowing after contact is an emergency.
Spider mites, the main indoor pest
Spider mites are the pest that finds this plant most often, and they thrive in exactly the conditions a heated winter room provides: warm, dry and still. They are barely visible, so what you notice first is the damage, a fine pale stippling across the leaf that looks as though the color has been sandblasted out of it, usually starting on the older lower leaves. Turn a leaf over and look with a lens and you will see the mites and, in a bad infestation, fine webbing in the leaf axils.
Deal with them the moment you see stippling. Take the plant to a sink or shower and rinse both sides of every leaf with lukewarm water, which physically removes the bulk of them. Then treat with insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil, covering the undersides thoroughly, and repeat every five to seven days for three treatments to catch newly hatched mites. Raising the humidity around the plant makes it much less attractive to them and is the main preventive measure.
The other pests, and how to tell them apart
Three more insects turn up regularly, and each leaves a signature that identifies it before you find the animal itself. Check the undersides of leaves and the joints where leaf stalks meet the cane once a fortnight; two minutes of looking catches all of them at the stage where a wipe with alcohol is enough.

Isolate any affected plant from the rest of the collection while you treat it. Mites and thrips move between touching leaves within days.
Root rot, stem rot and bacterial leaf spot
The diseases of dieffenbachia are almost all diseases of being too wet. Root rot follows compost that never dries, a pot with no drainage, or a saucer left full, and shows as yellowing lower leaves, a plant that wilts even though the compost is soaked, and roots that are brown and slide out of their sheaths. Stem rot goes further, turning the base of the cane soft and sour-smelling, at which point the only rescue is to take a clean cutting from the top and discard the rest.
Bacterial leaf spot looks different: dark, water-soaked spots with a yellow halo, often starting at a leaf margin and spreading when water sits on the foliage in a cool room. Remove the affected leaves entirely at the stem, sterilizing the blade between cuts, improve the air movement, stop misting, and water the compost rather than the leaves. There is no spray that reverses it; removing tissue and drying the air is the whole treatment.
Damage that is not a pest at all
A good half of what gets reported as disease is the plant reacting to its conditions. Learning to recognize these saves you from spraying a plant that needs moving instead.
Cold damage appears two or three days after a chilly night as soft gray or brown patches, often on the leaves nearest a window. Sunburn gives bleached, dry, papery patches on the leaves that face the glass, sharply bounded and always on the sunward side. Brown crisp tips come from dry air, fertilizer salts or fluoride in tap water. Loss of the lowest leaf every month or two, with the bare cane lengthening, is low light rather than illness. And a single yellow leaf at the very bottom of an otherwise healthy plant is simply age.

Inspection routine and records
Once a fortnight, turn three or four leaves over and look at the undersides and the leaf joints. That is the entire routine, and it catches mites, mealybug and scale early enough that a rinse and one treatment will finish them. Wipe the leaf surfaces with a damp cloth at the same time, wearing gloves, which removes dust and eggs together.
Keep a note of the date you first see any pest, what it was, what you treated with and the dates of the follow-up treatments. Mites in particular come back because people stop after one application; a written date for treatment two and three is what actually clears them. Record cold-damage events with the night temperature as well, because the same windowsill will do it again next winter unless the record reminds you to move the plant first.
