Where to Put a Dischidia: Light, Humidity and Heated Rooms

Bright indirect light and moving air suit a dischidia, but dry heated air is what actually kills it. Position it for humidity first and light second.

Bright, indirect, and steady

A dischidia grows in the canopy, shaded by the leaves of the tree it clings to but sitting in bright open air all day. Indoors that translates to a spot a few feet back from an east or a north facing window, or right up against a west or south window with a sheer curtain between the plant and the glass.

Direct midday sun through glass will scorch it within an afternoon, and the damage shows as pale bleached patches that never green up again. Early morning sun for an hour or two is fine and often improves the color. The test is simple: if the light on the leaves is bright enough to read a book by comfortably, without a hot patch of sun crossing them, it is right.

Humidity is the deciding factor

Light will make a dischidia grow well or badly. Dry air will make it live or die. It wants humidity above 60 percent and it suffers visibly below 40 percent, which is where most heated rooms sit through a cold season. The first symptom is shriveling, particularly at the leaf tips and on the newest growth, and it can appear within a week of the heating going on.

This is why the same plant that thrived all summer on a shelf can start collapsing in autumn without anything else having changed. The light did not change. The air did.

  1. Move it away from every heat source Radiators, underfloor heating, warm air vents and the top of a fridge all produce a dry updraught. A plant two feet above a radiator is sitting in the driest air in the house. Move it before you try anything else.
  2. Group it with other plants Several plants transpiring together raise the humidity of the air immediately around them by a useful margin. It is the cheapest fix there is and it works better than misting.
  3. Use a humidifier if the room runs below 40 percent A small cool mist unit running near the plant for a few hours a day is the reliable answer in a heated room. A cheap hygrometer next to the plant tells you whether you need one, and it is worth more than guesswork.
  4. Consider a glass cabinet or a terrarium For anyone in a genuinely dry climate, an enclosed case with a small fan is the difference between a plant that survives and one that thrives. It also solves watering, because the medium dries more slowly and evenly.

A pebble tray under an epiphyte does very little, and if the pot touches the water it does harm. Skip it in favor of grouping or a humidifier.

Air movement

Humid air that never moves is how fungal problems start, particularly on a plant whose leaves press flat against a mount or a wall. In the canopy there is always a breeze. Indoors, a gentle circulation of air keeps the leaf surfaces drying between waterings and keeps the base of the stems sound.

You do not need a draft. A small fan running on its lowest setting somewhere in the room, or simply a door left open so the air is not completely still, is enough. What you must avoid is a cold draft from a door to the outside or a gap in a window frame, which chills the plant and dries it at the same time.

Temperature range

Comfortable indoor warmth suits it: 65 to 80F (18 to 27C) through the growing season, and not below about 55F (13C) at any point. Cold does not simply slow this plant down, it damages the leaves, and cold combined with a wet root zone rots it outright.

Settle it and then leave it

A dischidia does not enjoy being moved. Each relocation means new light, new air movement and a new drying rate, and the plant spends a fortnight adjusting to all three. Choose the spot deliberately, using the criteria above, and then commit to it for a season rather than shuffling the plant around looking for improvement.

Write down where the plant stands, which way the window faces, and the humidity reading the week you settle it. If it does well, you know what to reproduce. If it fails, you know what to change, and you are not left guessing between four things you altered at once.
