How to Propagate Dischidia From Cuttings That Actually Root

Dischidia roots readily from a stem cutting with two or three nodes, provided you keep it humid and never bury it in wet compost.

What roots and what does not

Dischidia produces roots from its nodes, the small joints where a pair of leaves meets the stem. Any cutting that includes at least two nodes will root. A single leaf pulled off the stem will not, no matter how long you leave it in water, because there is no node and therefore no growing point.

Take material from a healthy stem that has firmed up slightly rather than from the soft translucent tip. The tip wilts before it can root. A section from a few inches back, with mature leaves and visible nodes, has the reserves to hold on for the two or three weeks it takes.

Taking the cutting

The best time is the warm growing season, when the parent plant is actively pushing new growth. Cuttings taken in a cool spell sit and do nothing for months and are far more likely to rot before they root.

  1. Cut cleanly below a node Use a blade wiped with alcohol and cut about a quarter inch (5 mm) below the lowest node you want to bury. A crushed stem from blunt scissors is an entry point for rot.
  2. Strip the lowest pair of leaves Pinch off the leaves at the node or nodes that will go into the medium. Leaves buried in damp bark rot and take the stem with them. Leave at least two pairs of leaves on the upper part.
  3. Let the cut callus for an hour or two Stand the cuttings on a dry surface out of the sun until the cut end looks sealed rather than wet. This short wait cuts rot losses noticeably and costs nothing.
  4. Insert into damp sphagnum or fine bark Push the stripped node just below the surface. It should stand up on its own without being pressed in hard. Do not use compost, and do not use a rooting medium that stays sodden.

Take three or four cuttings rather than one. Losses are normal, and a cluster of rooted cuttings potted together makes a fuller plant far sooner than a single stem ever will.

The humid box, and why it is the whole trick

A cutting has no roots and therefore no way of replacing the water it loses through its leaves. Everything about successful propagation comes down to slowing that loss until roots appear. Enclosing the cutting in humid air does that better than anything else.

A clear plastic box with a lid, a food container, or a freezer bag propped up over a pot all work. Keep it in bright indirect light, never in sun, because a sealed container in direct sun cooks the contents within an hour. Open it for a minute every couple of days to change the air, and put it back.

What happens and when

Expect the first roots at two to three weeks in warm humid conditions, and up to six weeks if the room is cooler. Resist the urge to tug at the cutting to check. Instead watch the leaves: a cutting that has rooted holds its leaves firm and then produces a new pair at the tip, and that new growth is the only confirmation you need.

Once new leaves appear, start opening the container a little more each day for a week, then remove it. Moving a cutting straight from a sealed humid box into a dry room is the commonest way to lose one that had already succeeded.

  2. Week two to four White root tips emerge from the buried node. If you are rooting in a clear container you will see them against the side.
  3. Week four to eight A new pair of leaves forms at the tip. This is the signal that the roots are working. Begin hardening off.
  4. After hardening off Pot three or four rooted cuttings together into one small pot of coarse bark, or bind them onto a mount. Water lightly and often, exactly as for an established plant.

Layering, the safer alternative

If you would rather not risk cuttings at all, peg a trailing stem down onto a second pot of damp bark without detaching it from the parent. The stem keeps drawing water from the parent plant while it roots at the pegged node, which removes the entire problem that cuttings face.

It takes longer, perhaps two months before the new roots are substantial, but the success rate is close to total. Sever the connection only once you see new growth on the layered section, and then treat it as an independent plant.

Note the date you take cuttings, the method used and how many of each survived. Two seasons of that tells you plainly whether your room needs the sealed box or whether an open pot is enough, and you stop repeating the method that loses half your material.
