Overview
Rosita was developed in Puerto Rico during the 1940s by crossing Native White with Black Beauty, and later bred at Rutgers for growers serving Caribbean markets. The pear-shaped fruit, 6 to 8 inches long and 3 to 6 inches wide, is pink-lavender with white shoulders; the creamy pale flesh keeps its mild, tender character even as the fruit sizes up. Vigorous, heat-loving plants set through humid summers and usually stand without staking. Start indoors 8 weeks before the last frost and transplant once nights are warm. The thin skin bruises easily, so pick at 4 to 6 inches while glossy and handle gently.
