Overview

Shoya Long is an early Japanese-type hybrid bred for very long, slender fruit, typically around 14 inches, whose skin is a glossy deep purple, echoed by the purple calyx. The flesh is tender and nearly seedless. Plants grow upright and vigorous, holding the long fruit off the soil and making picking easier than with sprawling types, and they stay productive over a long window, even through a hot Gulf Coast summer. Start seed indoors six to eight weeks before transplanting; it does well in open beds and in tunnels for season extension in cooler areas. First fruit comes around 60 days. Harvest while the skin still shines, because fruit left on the plant dulls and toughens.
