Fatsia Japonica Pests: Scale Insects, Sticky Leaves and Sooty Mold

Scale insects are the main pest of fatsia and they hide along the veins on the leaf undersides, producing sticky honeydew that turns black with mold. Catch them in spring and the job is small.

The sticky leaf, and what is causing it

The usual first sign is not an insect but a shine. Leaves feel tacky, the paving or the plants underneath develop a varnished film, and after a few weeks a sooty black coating appears on the upper leaf surfaces. That film is honeydew, the sugary waste of sap-feeding insects sitting above, and the black is a mold that grows on it. The mold does no direct damage but it blocks light and ruins the gloss, which on this plant is the whole point.

Turn a leaf over and look along the raised veins, especially where they branch near the leaf stalk. Scale insects sit there as small oval or circular bumps, tan to dark brown, two to four millimeters long, arranged in loose rows following the vein lines. They do not look like insects. Most people run a thumbnail over them assuming they are scabs or dried sap, and only realize what they are when one lifts off to reveal soft yellow tissue underneath.

Scale also colonises the leaf stalks and the shaded inner stems, which are the parts nobody inspects. On an established plant in deep shade, a colony can build for two seasons before the honeydew becomes obvious enough to notice.

Dealing with scale

Adult scale is protected by a waxy shell that most sprays cannot penetrate, which is why spraying an established infestation seems to do nothing. There are two things that work: physical removal at any time of year, and treating the crawler stage, when the newly hatched young are mobile and unprotected. Crawlers appear in late spring to early summer in most climates, over a period of a few weeks.

  1. Inspect the undersides in early spring Before growth starts, go over the plant leaf by leaf, turning each one and running your eye along the veins. Check leaf stalks and the stems in the middle of the plant too. This is the inspection that decides how much work the rest of the year is.
  2. Wipe adults off by hand A cloth or a soft brush dipped in soapy water removes adult scale directly. Support the leaf from below and wipe along the veins. On a plant with a dozen affected leaves this is a fifteen-minute job and may be all the control you need.
  3. Cut out the worst leaves rather than treating them A leaf carrying dozens of scale is not worth saving. Cut its stalk close to the stem and bin it. Removing three or four heavily infested leaves takes out more of the population than an hour of wiping.
  4. Treat the crawlers in late spring Once the adults are gone, watch for the crawler stage as the weather warms. Two applications of insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, ten to fourteen days apart, applied to the leaf undersides and stems, catch the young before they form shells.
  5. Wash the honeydew off Sponge the upper leaf surfaces with plain water once the insects are dealt with. The sooty mold does not brush off dry but comes away easily when the honeydew under it is dissolved.
  6. Re-inspect in late summer A second inspection at the end of summer catches anything the spring pass missed, and stops a colony overwintering on the inner stems ready to explode the following year.

The rest of what shows up

Scale is the main event, but a few other things appear regularly enough to be worth recognizing. Mealybugs behave like scale but look completely different: white cottony tufts in the leaf axils and along the stalks, mostly on indoor and conservatory plants. Treat them the same way, with a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit for individual clusters. Spider mites are an indoor-only problem, showing as fine pale stippling on the upper leaf surface with faint webbing beneath, and they are a symptom of air that is too dry and too warm.

Outdoors, slugs and snails rasp irregular holes in the low leaves and in soft new shoots after a hard cut, which is the one moment they can do real damage. Vine weevil adults notch the leaf margins in neat semicircular bites, and while the notching itself is cosmetic, it warns that grubs may be eating roots in a container. Aphids cluster on the flower stalks in autumn and are rarely worth treating.

Problems that are not pests

A large share of the damage blamed on insects on this plant is environmental. Pale yellow-green leaves across the whole plant mean too much direct sun and nothing else; there is no pest that produces uniform bleaching. Brown crisp margins concentrated on one side mean wind. Yellowing lower leaves on a plant in heavy wet soil mean the roots are drowning. In each case, searching for an insect wastes the season during which you could have fixed the actual cause.

Root rot is the one genuinely dangerous condition, and it is nearly always self-inflicted through overwatering or a blocked drainage hole. The signs are lower leaves yellowing and dropping while the soil stays dark and heavy, a sour smell at the surface, and stems that feel soft at the base. Lift a container plant out and look: healthy fatsia roots are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown, soft and pull apart between your fingers. Cut away the dead roots, repot into fresh open potting mix, and water sparingly until new growth appears.

Keep a note of the first date each year that you find scale and where on the plant it was. Scale populations return to the same shaded inner stems and the same generation of older leaves, so a two-line record turns next year's inspection from a whole-plant search into a two-minute check of three known spots.

Fatsia is not seriously troubled by disease. Occasional leaf spotting after a wet season is cosmetic and needs no treatment beyond removing the worst leaves and improving air movement around a crowded plant.
