Slugs and snails on emerging stalks
The damp shaded conditions fuki needs are exactly the conditions slugs and snails prefer, and the emerging stalks in spring are soft, pale and close to the ground. The damage shows as ragged holes in the unfurling leaf blade and, more seriously, as shallow grazed channels along the stalk itself. A grazed stalk is still edible if the damage is superficial, but a deeply chewed one collapses and is lost.
The pressure is concentrated in the two or three weeks when stalks are emerging and stops mattering once the leaves are up and the stalks have firmed. That narrow window makes control practical: pull the mulch back six inches (15 cm) from each cluster as the buds break so there is a dry strip with no daytime shelter, and go out with a torch on the first few mild damp evenings after emergence to collect by hand.
Beer traps and pellets both work, but the mulch layer is where the population lives, and no amount of trapping fixes a colony with three inches of damp organic matter sitting directly against every stalk.
Do not remove the mulch entirely to control slugs. The plant needs it more than it is harmed by them; the correct move is a bare collar around each cluster during emergence, replaced once the stalks have hardened.
Leaf scorch and midday wilt
Brown, dry, crumbling margins on otherwise healthy leaves are scorch, and the cause is almost always too much direct sun rather than a disease. It appears first on the leaves at the sunny edge of a colony and progresses inward through summer. There is no treatment for the affected leaves; the answer is either shade or more water, and shade is the more permanent fix.
Distinguish scorch from drought by where and when it shows. Drought wilts the whole plant, stalks included, and the plant recovers within hours of watering. Scorch affects only the margins of the most exposed leaves, does not recover after watering, and the stalks stay firm. A colony can have both at once.
Midday wilting followed by full recovery by evening is normal on hot days and requires no action. Wilting that is still present at dawn means the ground is dry and needs a long soak, not a sprinkle.
Crown and rhizome rot
Fuki tolerates permanently damp ground but not standing water over a dormant crown. The classic failure is a wet autumn followed by a wet winter in a bed with a pan or compacted layer under it: the water sits, the rhizome goes soft and brown in the center, and in spring only a few weak shoots appear where a dense stand stood the year before.
The diagnostic test is simple. Lift a section in late winter and cut through a rhizome. Healthy tissue is firm and creamy white throughout. Rot is brown, soft and often hollow, and it smells sour. Rotten sections do not recover and must be cut out and removed.

The escape problem
The most serious long-term hazard with fuki is not a pest at all. It is the plant itself arriving somewhere you did not plant it: through a gap in a barrier, over the top of one, along a drainage channel, or in soil moved from one part of the garden to another. Once it is into a lawn or a mixed border, removal is a multi-season job because every fragment left behind resprouts.
Deal with an escape the season you see it, not the season after. A single runner traced back and lifted whole takes ten minutes. The same runner left for two years is a patch three feet (90 cm) across sitting among the roots of other plants, and the only reliable removal then is to lift everything in the area, sieve the soil, and replant.
Repeated cutting does eventually exhaust a rhizome, but it takes two full seasons of removing every leaf as soon as it appears, and a single missed month resets the clock. Digging is faster wherever it is possible.
Keep a problem log
Record the date you first see slug damage each spring, because it is remarkably consistent year to year relative to emergence and it tells you exactly when to pull the mulch back next season rather than guessing. One line a year is enough.
Log any rot you find with the position it was in. Rot recurs in the same low spots, and two or three years of positions on a sketch map shows you where the drainage problem actually is far better than looking at the surface ever will.
Finally, keep a running note of every escaped shoot: where it was, how far from the colony, and when it was removed. That list is the honest measure of whether your containment is working, and if it lengthens year on year the barrier needs replacing rather than patrolling.
