Yellow leaves with green veins mean the soil is not acid enough
The classic gardenia symptom is a leaf that goes yellow between the veins while the veins themselves stay a distinct green, giving a net or skeleton pattern. It shows on the newest leaves first, because iron does not move around inside the plant to be recycled from older tissue. Left alone the whole plant pales, growth shortens, and flowering stops long before the plant looks like it is dying.
This is iron chlorosis, and it is a pH problem far more often than an iron shortage. Gardenias need genuinely acid conditions, around pH 5.0 to 6.0. Above roughly pH 6.5 the iron in the soil is chemically locked up and the roots cannot take it, no matter how much iron is present. Adding ordinary fertilizer does nothing for this and often makes the plant look worse.
Work out why the pH rose. In containers the usual cause is months of hard tap water, sometimes helped along by a non-acidic potting mix or a general-purpose feed. In the ground it is more often lime leaching from a concrete path, a house foundation or buried mortar rubble. Test at root depth rather than guessing.
The immediate response is chelated iron, watered onto the root zone or sprayed on the foliage, which greens the plant within two to four weeks. That is a symptom treatment and it wears off. The lasting fix is switching to rainwater, mulching with pine needles or composted bark, feeding only with an ericaceous product, and for a plant in genuinely limy ground, lifting it into a large container of acidic potting mix.

Mealybugs: white fluff in every joint
Gardenias are a magnet for mealybugs, and an indoor plant in still warm air is close to ideal for them. You will find small oval insects covered in white waxy powder, tucked into leaf axils, along the stems, under the leaves and around the base of flower buds. Alongside them sit patches of what looks like cotton wool, which are the egg masses.
They feed on sap, so the visible damage is stunted new growth, distorted leaves, bud drop, and a sticky honeydew coating that goes black with sooty mold. Because they hide in the joints and under the rim of the pot, a plant can look clean from a meter away and be heavily infested.
The waterproof wax makes them hard to kill and is also their weakness. Dabbing each insect with a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit dissolves the wax and kills it on contact, and on a small plant that is the fastest reliable method. On a larger plant, insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil works, but only where it lands, so coverage of the undersides and joints is everything.
Whatever you use, repeat it every seven days for at least three or four rounds. Contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single treatment always looks like a success and then fails a fortnight later when the next generation hatches.
- Isolate the plant Move it away from other plants before you start. Mealybug crawlers walk between touching leaves, and an infestation that spreads to a shelf of plants takes months to clear.
- Wipe out the visible colonies Go over every leaf axil, stem joint, leaf underside and the pot rim with a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit. This is tedious and it works. Take off badly infested shoot tips entirely.
- Spray thoroughly, then repeat weekly Insecticidal soap or a light horticultural oil, applied until it runs off the undersides, never in strong sun or on open flowers. Repeat at seven-day intervals four times, so each new hatch is caught before it breeds.
- Check the roots if it persists Slide the plant from its pot. White powdery deposits on the roots and inside the pot wall mean root mealybug: wash the roots clean, repot into fresh compost and a clean pot, and discard the old compost.
Scale insects and the sticky black film they cause
If the leaves are sticky to the touch and a black soot-like coating builds up on the upper surfaces, turn a leaf over and look along the midrib and the stems. Scale insects appear as flat or domed immobile bumps, brown, tan or white, often lined up neatly along a vein. They do not look like insects, which is why they are usually mistaken for scars or bud scales until the plant is badly infested.
Adult scale sits under a hard shield that most sprays cannot penetrate. The vulnerable stage is the crawler, a tiny mobile juvenile that moves in warm weather to find a feeding spot, so treatments timed to crawler activity work far better. For a manageable number, scrape the adults off with a fingernail or an old toothbrush and wipe the stem clean, then follow up with horticultural oil, which smothers rather than poisons and gets past the shield. Repeat at seven to fourteen day intervals until you stop finding new ones.
The black film itself is sooty mold, a harmless fungus growing on the honeydew rather than on the plant. It does no direct damage, but it blocks light from the leaf and looks terrible. It cannot be treated on its own: kill the scale or the mealybug producing the honeydew, then sponge the leaves with warm water and a drop of mild detergent. If the sooty mold returns, you did not clear the insects.
Ants running up and down the stems mean sap-sucking insects are present even if you have not found them yet. Ants farm scale and mealybug for the honeydew and will actively move them around the plant, so a trail of ants is worth a proper search of the leaf undersides.
The rest of the list, and when a plant is not worth saving
Red spider mite arrives in dry heated air, especially in winter. The first sign is a fine pale stippling on the leaves that you notice mainly when the light is behind them, followed by very fine webbing in the shoot tips. Raising humidity is both the cure and the prevention, along with treating the leaf undersides where they actually live.
Whitefly appear as tiny white insects that fly up in a cloud when you disturb the plant, and they also produce honeydew and sooty mold. Sticky traps show you how bad the population is, and treatment needs the same weekly rhythm as mealybug. Bud drop, brown leaf tips and flowers that brown as they open, on the other hand, are not pest problems at all: those belong to water, humidity, night temperature and disturbance, and spraying them wastes your time.
Know when to stop. A gardenia that has lost most of its roots to waterlogging, or that has been covered in scale for a season, will spend a year looking terrible and may still not recover. If it is small and cheap to replace, or if healthy plants nearby are at risk, take cuttings from a clean shoot and discard the rest.
Keep a dated symptom log
Every gardenia problem in this guide is diagnosed by when it happened as much as by what it looks like, so write the dates down. Note the day you first saw a symptom, on which part of the plant, and what the weather or the room was doing at the time. Yellowing that appears within a fortnight of moving indoors for winter is a different story from yellowing that has crept on since spring.
Record every treatment with its date and what you used, because the weekly repeat is the part that gets forgotten and it is the part that decides whether the pest comes back. A list of four dates on a label stuck in the pot is enough. Note where the plant was standing when the problem started, and whether other plants shared the shelf, since outbreaks nearly always trace back to a new plant arriving.
Finally, record the date of the last repot, the last pot flush and the last iron application. When a plant goes gradually pale over two seasons, those three dates usually contain the explanation.
