What thrips damage looks like, and how early to catch it
Gladiolus thrips are slender dark insects about a sixteenth of an inch (1.5 mm) long, small enough that most people see the damage long before the pest. They feed by rasping the surface of leaves and petals and sucking out the contents, which leaves the tissue empty and reflective. On leaves that shows as silvery or whitish streaks running lengthwise, usually with tiny dark specks of excrement scattered over them. On flowers it shows as white flecking and browning on the petals, buds that fail to open, or spikes that open distorted and streaked.
The damage is progressive and it accelerates in hot dry weather. A light infestation early in the season on the lower leaves becomes a heavy one by flowering, at which point the spikes are simply unusable. This is why the useful inspection is in early summer, when the plants are knee high and the leaves are still all green, rather than at flowering when the damage is already done.
To check, look down into the tight center of the leaf fan and at the base of the leaves where they overlap. Thrips shelter in those enclosed spaces and are almost never on the open leaf surface where a casual look would find them. Tapping a leaf fan over a sheet of white paper is the quickest test: the thrips fall and show as moving dark slivers.
Left untreated, a badly infested planting produces spikes that brown before they open and corms that go into storage already carrying the pest, which is how the problem repeats and worsens each year.
The corms are the reservoir, and that is where to break the cycle
The reason gladiolus thrips are so persistent is that they do not need to survive outdoors. When the corms are lifted, the thrips go with them, feeding through the winter on the corm surface under the tunic in a warm dry store. In spring the infested corms are planted and the pest starts the new season already on the plant. A garden that sprays diligently every summer and stores corms warm will have the same problem indefinitely.
Infested corms are recognizable once you know the sign: a rough, sticky, brownish surface film, sometimes with a varnished look, rather than the clean papery tunic of a sound corm. Badly affected corms are corky and may fail to sprout. Sort these out at cleaning and destroy them rather than planting them.
The single most effective control is storage temperature. Below about 45F (7C) the thrips stop breeding, and corms held through the winter at 35-40F (2-4C) come out effectively clean. This costs nothing and works far better than anything sprayed on growing plants, where the pest is hidden inside the leaf sheaths.

What to do during the growing season
Once thrips are in a planting the aim is to hold the damage below the level that spoils the flowers, because eradication during the season is not realistic. The measures below work together and none of them substitutes for the cold winter storage that actually breaks the cycle.
- Inspect weekly from knee height onward Part the leaf fan and look into the center, or tap a fan over white paper. Finding them at the first silvering rather than at flowering is worth more than any treatment applied later.
- Cut and destroy the worst spikes A spike already browning in bud is not recoverable and is a breeding site feeding the rest of the block. Cut it out and bin or burn it rather than composting it.
- Keep the plants watered and the air humid Thrips multiply fastest in hot dry conditions. Consistent watering and an overhead rinse of the foliage on hot evenings genuinely slows a population, though avoid leaving foliage wet overnight in cool weather.
- Clear weeds and old debris around the block Thrips move in from grasses and weedy ground. A clean margin around the planting and prompt removal of old gladiolus foliage at the end of the season reduce the numbers arriving.
- Move the planting each year Do not plant gladiolus in the same ground two years running. It reduces both thrips carryover and the soil-borne rots that cause yellowing and corm decay.
The end of the season is the decisive moment, not the middle of it. Corms lifted from an infested block, cured, cleaned hard and then stored genuinely cold will start the next season nearly clean, whatever the damage looked like in summer.
The rots, and the plants worth giving up on
After thrips, the trouble that matters is rot in the corm. It arrives two ways: from cold wet soil around a newly planted corm before it roots, and from storage that was damp or poorly cured. It shows in the ground as a gap where nothing emerges, or as a plant whose leaves yellow from the base upward in midsummer while the neighbors stay green. A corm lifted from such a plant will have sunken brown patches or a dry crumbling core.
There is no treatment. Lift the affected plant with its corm and dispose of it, and do not replant gladiolus in that spot for several years. The organisms responsible persist in soil, and repeating a planting on infected ground reliably repeats the loss.
Prevention is a short list: plant into warm soil that drains, do not overwater before emergence, cure the corms hard after lifting, store them dry and cold, and discard rather than plant anything that feels soft or light in the hand. Corms are cheap relative to a lost season, and a doubtful corm planted in the middle of a block is a poor bargain.
Records that make the pattern visible
Note the date you first saw silvering and on which block, because thrips arrive at roughly the same point each year in a given garden and knowing that date lets you inspect a fortnight before it next season rather than a month after. Record which blocks were affected and where they were planted, so the rotation is based on something written rather than remembered.
At lifting, record how many corms you discarded and why: soft, scabby, or sticky with thrips. Those three counts, kept over two or three seasons alongside the storage temperature you actually achieved, will show plainly whether the problem is in the ground, in the summer, or in the box. Most people find it is the box.
