Water hardest from first flower onwards
Beans are undemanding about water until they flower. From the moment the first flowers open until the pods have filled, they are the opposite: a dry week in that window drops flowers wholesale and leaves you with a fraction of the crop you should have had. Aim for roughly an inch (25 mm) a week from rain or watering combined, delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than a daily sprinkle.
A shallow daily watering keeps the roots near the surface where they cook in hot weather. Soak the base until the water has gone down six inches (15 cm), then leave it until the top two inches (5 cm) are dry again. In midsummer that will typically be every three to four days in open ground.

Water the soil, not the plants. Bean foliage that stays wet overnight is how rust and gray mold start, and a wet flower is more likely to abort than a dry one.
Do not feed them nitrogen
Beans host bacteria in nodules on their roots that pull nitrogen out of the air, so a healthy bean plant supplies most of its own. Add a nitrogen-rich fertilizer or fresh manure on top of that and you get a magnificent dark green plant, several feet of lush growth, and almost no pods. This is the single most common reason a bean crop disappoints.
What beans do want is potassium and phosphorus, and a soil that is not acidic. Work a low-nitrogen general fertilizer or a dressing of wood ash into the bed before sowing, and lime an acidic bed the season before. After that, leave them alone until they are actually cropping.
- Check the roots if in doubt Lift a spare plant and look for pea-sized nodules on the roots. Cut one: pink or red inside means it is actively fixing nitrogen and the plant needs no feeding.
- Feed only once picking starts A liquid feed low in nitrogen, every two weeks once you are picking, keeps a pole bean producing into autumn. Bush beans rarely need even this.
- Read the plant Dark blue-green leaves the size of your hand with no flowers means too much nitrogen. Pale yellowish leaves all over with thin stems means the nodules failed and a weak feed is justified.
Mulch is worth more than extra watering
Two inches (5 cm) of straw or grass clippings laid around the plants once the soil has warmed cuts your watering roughly in half, holds the soil temperature steady in a heatwave, and stops rain splashing soil-borne fungal spores up onto the lower leaves. On a bean crop that last point matters as much as the moisture.
Wait until the soil is properly warm before mulching. Mulch laid on cold soil in spring keeps it cold, which is precisely the wrong thing for a crop that will not do anything below 60F (15C). Keep the mulch an inch or two clear of the stems so the base can dry.

Heat makes flowers drop, and that is not your fault
Above about 90F (32C) by day, or above 70F (21C) at night, bean pollen becomes unviable and the flowers fall off without setting a pod. You will see a plant covered in flowers one day and bare flower stalks two days later, in perfect health. It is temperature, not disease and not something you did.
The practical response is to keep the plant alive and in good condition through the hot spell so it sets a full crop when the weather breaks, which it usually does within a fortnight. Keep the soil evenly moist, keep the mulch on, and consider shade cloth over the row in the afternoon during a serious heatwave. Do not pull the plants and do not start feeding them.

Record the flowering date
The two dates that make next season easier are the date the first flower opened and the date you first picked. Green beans run about 55 to 60 days from sowing to first pick, and roughly 10 to 14 days from open flower to a pod worth picking, but your soil and your summer will shift both. Write down the actual numbers and your successional sowings stop being guesswork.
It is worth noting where each row stood as well. Beans should not follow beans, peas or any other legume on the same ground for three years, and a sketch of the bed with dates on it is far more reliable than remembering next spring which end of the plot had the beans.
