Density is behind most of it
Before treating anything on a hassaku, look at the canopy. This tree grows into a dense shell, and a dense shell is warm, still, humid and dark inside. That is ideal for scale insects and mealybug, it hides the early stages of every problem from you, and it means a spray never reaches the interior where the population actually lives.
The consequence is that pruning and thinning are pest control measures on this tree, not just crop management. A canopy you can see sky through is one where you spot a scale colony in its first month, where spray coverage is real, and where predatory insects can work. Reaching for a spray on an unpruned hassaku is treating the symptom of a structural problem.
The second common cause is uneven watering, which produces split fruit, fruit drop and poor rind quality. Neither has anything to do with pests, and both are frequently misdiagnosed as disease because the damage appears suddenly.
What to look for and what it means
Use this as a first pass when something looks wrong. Inspect the underside of leaves and the shaded interior of the canopy, not just the outer foliage, because that is where problems begin.

Scale, honeydew and ants: treat them as one problem
Scale insects are the defining pest of a mature hassaku. They sit still on stems and along leaf veins under a hard or waxy shell, feed on sap, and excrete honeydew. Sooty mold then grows on the honeydew, blackening leaves and fruit. Growers often notice the black film first and assume they have a fungal disease, but the mold is only a symptom; it disappears once the insects are gone and the residue weathers off.
Ants complete the cycle. They protect scale and mealybug from the predators that would otherwise control them, and they carry crawlers to new parts of the canopy. Treating scale while leaving an ant highway up the trunk means the population rebuilds within a season.
Deal with all three together. Lift the skirt so no branch touches the ground, a wall or a neighboring plant, which removes every ant route except the trunk. Band the trunk with a sticky barrier. Then spray horticultural oil with genuinely complete coverage, including the undersides of leaves and the interior branches, and repeat after two to three weeks to catch the crawlers that hatch after the first pass.
Time oil sprays for a mild, overcast day, and never apply oil to a tree that is drought-stressed or in high heat. Oil on a stressed citrus in full sun scorches leaves, and on a hassaku with a big exposed canopy the damage is very visible.
Coverage decides whether an oil spray works, not the strength of the mix. A weak, thorough application beats a strong one that misses the shaded interior. If you cannot physically get the sprayer into the middle of the canopy, prune first and spray afterwards.
Leafminer, split fruit and the damage you should ignore
Citrus leafminer attacks only soft, expanding leaves, leaving silvery winding tunnels and curled, distorted foliage. On a mature tree it looks alarming and matters very little; the affected leaves still function and the tree outgrows the damage. Spraying hardened leaves achieves nothing, because the insect is inside the tissue and is no longer feeding there. The real control is to avoid provoking late soft flushes, which means no nitrogen after midsummer and no autumn pruning.
Split fruit is a watering fault. The flesh expands after a heavy watering or rain while the rind, which has hardened during a dry spell, cannot stretch, so the fruit tears. Consistent moisture and a good mulch layer prevent it. Split fruit will not heal, so remove it as soon as you see it rather than leaving it to rot in the canopy and attract insects.
Rind blemish, wind scarring and small surface marks are cosmetic. Hassaku rind is thick and is entirely removed before eating, so a scarred fruit is as good on the plate as a clean one. Do not spray for appearance on a fruit you are going to peel in panels.
Storage rot is the loss that actually costs you fruit, and it is preventable at picking. Cut stems flush rather than pulling fruit off, do not stack deep, keep the box airy, and inspect weekly. One soft fruit left in contact with its neighbors will take a whole layer in a fortnight.
The record that makes next year easier
For each problem, write the date you first saw it, which part of the tree it appeared in, and what you did. Position matters more than people expect: scale that starts on the shaded north side every year tells you the canopy is too dense on that side, which is a pruning instruction rather than a spraying one.
Record spray dates and intervals too. The most common reason an oil treatment fails is that the second application never happened, and a written date is the only reliable defense against that. Note storage losses in the same place, with the picking date, so a bad year in the box can be traced back to how the crop was cut.
