Mountain Laurel Soil pH: Testing, Correcting and Keeping It Acid

Mountain laurel wants pH 4.5 to 5.5 and shows you clearly when it is not getting it. Testing properly, correcting slowly and finding the hidden lime are what keep the leaves green.

The range, and what happens outside it

Mountain laurel belongs to the Ericaceae and feeds the way a rhododendron does. It wants soil between pH 4.5 and 5.5. Within that band the roots take up iron and manganese readily, the foliage is a clean deep green, and the plant grows steadily and flowers well. It will tolerate up to about pH 6.0 without obvious complaint. Above that it begins to fail, and the failure is not dramatic enough to be alarming at first, which is exactly why it goes unaddressed for years.

The mechanism is worth understanding because it changes what you do about it. Iron and manganese do not disappear from alkaline soil. They convert into chemical forms the roots cannot absorb, so the shrub can be standing in ground that contains plenty of both while showing every sign of shortage. Adding iron fertilizer to alkaline soil therefore does very little; the iron simply locks up like the rest. Lowering the pH is what releases what is already there.

A second effect compounds the first. At low pH this plant's fine roots work in partnership with soil fungi that extend their reach for water and nutrients, and that partnership weakens as the ground turns neutral. So a shrub in alkaline soil is not only short of iron; it is also drawing water less effectively, which is why chlorotic plants so often show scorched margins in a dry summer as well. The practical target is therefore not merely to avoid alkalinity but to hold the soil genuinely acid, and to keep checking, because most gardens drift upward over time rather than down.

Testing so the number means something

Most useless pH readings come from a badly taken sample rather than a bad kit. Take the soil from the actual root zone of the actual plant, at a depth of six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm), not from the surface and not from somewhere else in the same bed. Surface soil under an acid mulch reads lower than the ground the roots are working in, which produces a comfortable number and a yellow shrub.

Take three or four samples from around the drip line, mix them, and test the mixture. Soil pH varies surprisingly over a few feet, particularly near a wall, a path or anywhere rubble was buried, and a single core can easily land on an unrepresentative pocket. Remove mulch, roots and stones before testing, follow the kit's water quantity exactly, and use distilled water rather than tap water, which is alkaline enough to shift a result by half a point.

Retest every second or third year on a settled plant, and every year on any plant that has shown chlorosis or that sits near a lime source. A single reading is a number. Three readings over five years is a trend, and it is the trend that tells you whether your management is holding the line.

  1. Scrape the mulch aside Pull the mulch layer back to bare soil before you take anything. Mulch and partly rotted bark give a false, more acid reading than the root zone below.
  2. Sample at root depth around the drip line Take cores six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) deep from three or four points under the outer edge of the canopy, where the working roots actually are.
  3. Mix and clean the sample Combine the cores in a clean container and pick out stones, roots and leaf fragments. Break up any lumps so the sample is uniform.
  4. Test with distilled water Hard tap water alone can raise a reading by half a point. Use distilled or deionised water and measure the quantity the kit specifies rather than estimating.
  5. Record the number, the date and the spot Write down where in the bed you sampled and how deep. Comparing readings only works if they came from the same place.
  6. Repeat on the far side of the plant if the result surprises you A wall footing or buried rubble on one side will give two quite different numbers a few feet apart, which is itself the diagnosis.

Correcting an alkaline soil, slowly

Elemental sulfur is the tool for lowering pH and it works through soil bacteria, which means it is slow, temperature-dependent and impossible to hurry. Apply it to the surface over the whole root spread and rake it lightly into the top inch or two, never dig it in, because forking through the root zone of a mountain laurel does more damage than the correction is worth. Expect a full growing season before the reading moves and often two before it settles at the new level.

Apply modestly and retest rather than trying to fix everything at once, because sulfur overshoots easily on sandy soil and burns fine roots when it is concentrated. Early spring or autumn is better than the heat of midsummer. Support it with mulch, which does part of the same job permanently: pine needles, composted bark, oak leafmould and pine bark fines all acidify gently as they break down while improving the moisture holding of exactly the layer these roots occupy. Three inches (8 cm) topped up every spring, over the whole root spread and pulled back from the stem, is the single most useful ongoing habit.

Where the ground is chalky or limestone based, do not commit to a long fight. Free lime in the subsoil buffers everything you add and pushes the pH back up year after year, and the shrub is the one that pays. A raised bed of acidic potting mix over free-draining ground, or a large container of at least eighteen inches (45 cm) across, watered with rainwater, will grow a good plant where an in-ground bed will only ever produce a slow decline.

Chelated iron sprayed onto the foliage greens up affected leaves within a fortnight and is genuinely useful first aid on a badly weakened plant. It does nothing to the soil. If you find yourself applying it every year, the underlying pH has not been dealt with.

Finding the lime you did not know was there

A great many mountain laurels that yellow are growing in soil that was acid when they were planted. Something is adding lime, and it is usually one of a short list. Mortar in a nearby wall leaches calcium into the ground beside it for the life of the wall. Buried building rubble, old concrete, and the sand and hardcore under a path all do the same, and the effect reaches several feet out from whatever is causing it. Where a house once stood under what is now lawn, the old footings raise the pH quietly for decades.

Hard tap water is the other steady input. Watering an ericaceous plant weekly through every summer with hard mains water measurably lifts the pH of the root zone over a few years. Collected rainwater avoids the problem entirely. Where you can only use the tap, mulch more heavily, test more often, and expect to apply sulfur periodically as maintenance rather than as a one-off cure.

Then there are the things people add without thinking. Garden lime obviously, but also mushroom compost, which is routinely limed and is one of the commonest accidental causes of chlorosis in an acid bed. Wood ash is strongly alkaline. Many general fertilizers and lawn products contain lime or raise pH as a side effect, and lawn feed washing into an adjacent bed is a real source. Keep all of them well away from the root spread.

The diagnosis to trust is the leaf itself. A yellow blade with narrow dark green veins, appearing on the newest leaves at the shoot tips first, is a pH problem almost every time, because iron does not move around inside the plant and the youngest growth is served last. Yellowing that is uniform across the whole leaf including the veins, starting on the oldest leaves low down, is something else: a nitrogen shortage, or roots sitting in water. Confirm either with a test before acting.
