Overview
Ithaca was bred by G. Raleigh at Cornell University and released in 1969 as a crisphead that could take summer heat. It forms large, solid, tightly wrapped heads about 5 to 6 inches across with frilly green leaves that stay crisp rather than going rubbery or bitter, and it is slow to send up a seed stalk. Its main strengths are tolerance to tipburn and brown rib, the leaf-edge browning that hits icebergs under heat or uneven watering, and it also carries resistance to lettuce mosaic virus. Sow a quarter inch deep as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall, thin to 10 to 12 inches, keep moisture steady while the head builds, and cut once firm.
