The timing is not negotiable
Mango flowers from terminal buds on shoots that grew and then hardened during the previous season. Anything that removes or restarts those tips removes the flowers. Pruning immediately after the last fruit comes off gives the tree the whole remaining warm season to push a flush, extend, and harden that new growth well before the rest period begins, so the buds it carries into the dry spell are the ones that become panicles.
Cut late and the sequence breaks. A tree pruned a couple of months before flowering responds with a soft flush that is still growing when the rest begins, and soft growth does not form flower buds. The tree looks vigorous and produces nothing, and the gardener usually blames the weather. Late pruning is one of the most common self-inflicted causes of a blank season.
The window in practice is short: prune as soon as the harvest finishes, and stop entirely once the flush that follows has hardened. From that point until after the next harvest, the only cutting justified is removing broken, dead or diseased wood.
Prune in dry weather. Fresh cuts on a mango in wet conditions are open doors for the fungus that blackens the panicles, and it lives in dead and dying twigs. Cutting on a dry day with clean tools, and cutting back to healthy wood rather than leaving stubs, denies it the wood it survives in.

Shape: low, open and within reach
An unpruned mango becomes a thirty- to forty-foot (9-12 m) tree with a dense canopy, and everything that matters then happens where you cannot get to it. The goal in a garden is a tree held at ten to fifteen feet (3-4.5 m) with an open interior, and that shape is easier to establish early than to impose later.
Start on a young tree by tipping the leader at about three feet (90 cm) to force branching, then select three or four well-spaced main limbs coming off the trunk at wide angles and pointing in different directions. Narrow crotches split under a fruit load; wide ones hold. Tip each of those limbs once they have extended two or three feet (60-90 cm) to build a second tier, and you have a frame in two or three seasons.
On an established tree the work is thinning rather than shortening. Take out branches growing inward across the center, remove one of any pair that crosses and rubs, and cut water shoots, the vertical whips that shoot up from the top of a limb, back to their origin. What you want is a canopy that light reaches into and wind moves through. This is not cosmetic: a canopy that dries by mid-morning after rain is dramatically less prone to the disease that ruins panicles, and wood in good light flowers while shaded wood does not.
Keep the total removed in one season to roughly a quarter or a third of the canopy. Beyond that the tree answers with a mass of water shoots, and you spend the following two seasons undoing it.
- Take out dead, damaged and diseased wood first Cut back to clean healthy wood. Dead twigs and old blackened panicle stalks are where the anthracnose fungus overwinters, so this pass is disease control as much as shaping.
- Remove every mummified fruit and old panicle Anything shriveled still hanging in the canopy is carrying spores into next season. Pull them all out and dispose of them away from the tree, along with fallen fruit and leaves beneath it.
- Open the center Take out inward-growing branches and one of each crossing pair. Aim for an interior you can see daylight through. Panicles form on the outside of the canopy, so an open center costs you nothing and gains you airflow.
- Bring the height down in stages Cut tall leaders back to a well-placed outward-facing side branch rather than to a stub. If you need to remove more than a third of the height, do it over two seasons; a hard single cut produces a thicket of water shoots.
- Tip the outer shoots to build density Shortening the outermost shoots by a few inches forces two or three new tips from each, and each of those can carry a panicle. This is how you increase flowering positions on a tree that has gone leggy.
- Clear the skirt Remove low branches that touch the ground or hang into the mulch. They collect splash from the soil, stay wet longest, and let ants and other pests walk straight into the canopy.
Every cut releases the same sap that burns skin at harvest. Wear gloves and long sleeves, keep cut ends pointed away from your face, and wash any splash off promptly. A large limb removal can put a surprising amount of sap on your forearms.
Restoring a tree that has grown out of reach
A neglected mango carrying its crop at thirty feet is a common inheritance, and it can be brought back. The tree tolerates hard cutting well and will regrow from bare wood, but the operation costs a crop or two and must be spread across seasons. Do it immediately after a harvest, never in wet weather, and never all at once.
The usual approach is to take the height down by a third in the first season, cutting main limbs back to a strong outward branch or, where no branch exists, to a clean stub above a visible bud cluster. The tree responds with vigorous water shoots from around the cuts. In the following season, select two or three of those per cut to become the new framework and remove the rest, which is the step people skip and which decides whether you end up with a manageable tree or a bush on stilts.
Paint newly exposed limbs. Bark that has been shaded for a decade sunburns within weeks of exposure, and a scalded limb dies back and lets rot in. White water-based paint thinned by half, applied to every upward-facing surface you have exposed, prevents it.
Expect no fruit in the season after a hard cut and a light crop the season after that. By the third year a restored tree usually carries more accessible fruit than the tall one did, because the crop is on wood in good light and within reach of the ground.
Photograph the tree before you start and note which limbs you removed and when. When you come back a year later to thin the water shoots, the record is what stops you cutting away the very limbs you meant to keep as the new frame.
