Marguerite Daisy Pests and Diseases: Leaf Miner Tunnels, Aphids and Stem Rot

Pale winding tunnels in the leaves are the signature marguerite problem and are cosmetic. Aphids on the buds and rot at the wet crown are the ones that actually cost you the plant.

Leaf miner: the tunnels everyone finds and nobody recognizes

The classic marguerite blemish is a pale, winding, slightly translucent line meandering across a leaf, widening as it goes and often ending in a small blister. That is a leaf miner: the larva of a tiny fly that laid an egg on the leaf surface, whose grub is now eating its way between the upper and lower leaf skins. Hold the leaf up to the light and you can usually see the grub itself as a small dark speck at the wide end of the tunnel. Marguerite and its relatives in the daisy family are the preferred hosts, and on a plant grown in the open you should expect to see some.

The important thing is that leaf miner is almost entirely cosmetic. A plant carrying a scatter of mined leaves flowers exactly as well as a clean one. The damage looks alarming because the tunnels are pale against green and because they accumulate over the season, but the plant loses very little functioning leaf area to them. There is no need to spray, and in fact contact sprays do nothing at all because the grub is sealed inside the leaf where the spray cannot reach it.

The one control that works is your fingers. Pick off and bin every mined leaf as you see it, which removes the grub before it drops out to pupate and produce the next generation. Do not compost them. Start when you see the first tunnel and stay on top of it weekly, and the population stays low. Let it run all season on a plant in a sheltered spot and by autumn half the foliage can be scribbled over, at which point it does start to matter.

Yellow sticky traps hung just above the plant catch the adult flies and give you an early warning that egg-laying has started, which is worth more than the small number of flies they actually kill. They also catch whitefly and fungus gnats, so one trap covers three problems at once.

Aphids, whitefly and the things on the soft growth

Aphids go straight for the tips and the flower buds, which are the softest tissue on the plant. Colonies build fastest in warm still weather and on plants that have been pushed with a nitrogen-rich feed. Distorted, crumpled new leaves and buds that open lopsided or fail to open at all are the usual first sign, along with sticky honeydew on the leaves below and the black sooty mold that grows on it later.

Whitefly is the container and greenhouse problem, especially on plants overwintered indoors in a warm room. Brush the plant and a cloud of tiny white insects lifts and resettles. The scales on the leaf undersides are the feeding stage and are what you actually have to deal with. Both pests are controllable with repeated action rather than one heroic treatment: a firm jet of water knocks aphids off, insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil applied to the leaf undersides handles both, and repeats every five to seven days for three applications are needed because eggs hatch after the spray has gone.

Check the plant weekly with a hand in the foliage, turning a few leaves over. Every problem on this list is trivial when found early and a real job once it has three generations behind it.

Rots, mildew and the problems that actually kill

The one that kills marguerites is rot at the base. A plant standing in soil or compost that never dries, or one with a crown buried under mulch or packed with old clippings, develops a soft brown or black collapse at the stem base in warm humid weather. The first sign above ground is a whole branch wilting while the rest of the plant looks fine, and by the time you see that the stem below is usually already gone. Cut into it and the tissue is soft and discolored rather than firm and green.

There is no reliable cure once the crown itself is affected. If a single stem has gone, cut it out well below the damage into clean tissue, clear everything away from the base, and let the surface dry between waterings. If the whole crown is soft, take cuttings from any clean growth left at the tips immediately and dispose of the plant. Do not replant another marguerite into the same spot in the same season.

Powdery mildew shows as a white dusty film on the upper leaf surfaces, usually late in the season on crowded plants or ones dried out at the root. It rarely kills but it ruins the plant's appearance and it is a signal to space plants further apart next year. Gray mold is the wet-weather version, appearing as fuzzy gray growth on dead flowers that then spreads into the stem below. Deadheading regularly is most of the control for both.

Knowing when to give up on a plant

This is a cheap, fast-growing, easily propagated plant, and treating it as precious leads to worse outcomes than replacing it. A plant with soft brown collapse at the crown, one with mildew through most of its foliage in midsummer, or a second-year specimen that is bare gray wood with a few tufts of leaf at the tips is not worth the effort of rescue.

The right move in every one of those cases is the same: take four or five cuttings from whatever healthy soft growth remains at the tips, root them in gritty potting mix, and compost the parent. Rooted cuttings take about three weeks and give you a better plant than the one you removed. Keeping a diseased parent through a winter to save a few weeks is how you carry whitefly and mildew into next season.

What to record

Write down the date you first see leaf miner tunnels each year, and the date you first find aphids on the buds. Those two dates repeat closely from season to season in the same garden, and knowing them turns pest control from a rescue operation into a five-minute check made a week beforehand.

Record which plants and which positions had problems and which did not. Rot is almost always about the spot rather than the plant, so a note saying which bed or which pot lost a plant to a wet crown is what stops you repeating it. Note any treatment you used and how many times you applied it, because a single application that appeared not to work usually just needed the second and third repeat.
