Overview

Quedlinburger Fruhe Liebe (listed as Quadlinburger Fruhe Liebe) is a German heirloom whose name translates roughly as early love of Quedlinburg. It is reported to be extremely early, ripening about three weeks before other early sorts, with red fruit the size of a large cherry or a bit bigger and a flavor rated well above Early Girl. Potato-leaf foliage grows in an open, airy pattern that leaves space between branches, which helps air flow and lowers fungus risk; it reportedly came from a cool, rainy coastal climate and produces well there. In a 6-foot cage the unpruned plant reached about 5 feet and was loaded with clusters of 4 to 8 fruits. Open-pollinated, so seed can be saved.
