Powdery mildew: the one everybody gets
Powdery mildew is the defining disease of this family, and in most gardens the question is when it arrives rather than whether. It shows first as small round white patches like flour dust, usually on the upper surface of the older, shaded leaves near the crown. Unlike most fungal problems it thrives in warm, dry air with humid nights, so a dry midsummer offers no protection at all.
Caught at the first few spots it can be held off for weeks; once whole leaves are gray it is over for those leaves. Remove the affected leaves immediately, cutting at the stem and bagging them rather than dropping them in the bed. Then treat the remaining canopy weekly with potassium bicarbonate at the rate on the label, or with a milk spray at roughly one part milk to nine parts water applied on a sunny morning. Sulfur works too, but never within two weeks of an oil spray and never above 85F (29C), or you scorch the plant.
You are managing mildew, not eliminating it. The goal is to keep enough green leaf on the vine to finish the fruit already set. A plant that holds its canopy three extra weeks ripens its crop; a defoliated one ripens sunscorched, flavorless fruit.
Squash vine borer
The squash vine borer kills a healthy plant in about two days and gives almost no warning. A clear-winged moth that looks more like a wasp lays single eggs at the base of the stem in early summer; the grub tunnels inside and eats out the stem's plumbing. The first symptom most people notice is a plant wilting hard and never recovering, and by then the damage is done.
Look for the real early sign instead: a small wet hole at the base of the stem with a pile of moist sawdust-like frass beneath it. Slit the stem lengthwise with a razor blade above that hole, dig the fat white grub out with a wire, then bury that section of stem under two inches (5 cm) of damp soil so it roots from the wound. Plants can be saved this way, though seldom more than once. Squash, pumpkin and other thick-stemmed types are the main targets; melons, cucumbers and watermelon are largely left alone.
- Wrap the stem base early Foil or a strip of old stocking around the bottom six inches (15 cm) of stem, applied while the plant is young, physically blocks egg laying. It is the most reliable prevention there is.
- Check the base twice a week Move the mulch aside and look for a hole with frass. Two minutes per plant. This is the only inspection that catches the borer while surgery still works.
- Bury the vine at intervals Cover leaf joints along the runner with soil so they root. If the crown is lost, those rooted sections can carry the plant to a harvest on their own.
- Pull and destroy failed plants A dead vine holds a grub that will pupate in your soil and come back next year. Remove the plant, dig around the crown, and do not compost any of it.
Cucumber beetles and bacterial wilt
Striped and spotted cucumber beetles do modest direct damage by chewing leaves and flowers, but their real threat is what they carry. They transmit the bacterium that causes bacterial wilt, an incurable disease that shuts a plant down within a fortnight. Cucumbers and muskmelons are highly susceptible; squash and watermelon far less so.
Test a wilted plant before you write it off. Cut the stem across, press the two cut faces together and pull them slowly apart. If a fine sticky white thread stretches between them, that is bacterial wilt and the plant must be pulled and destroyed today, before beetles feed on it and carry it to the neighbors. No thread means look for a borer, root damage or simple drought instead.

Squash bugs and the sap feeders
Squash bugs are flat gray-brown shield-shaped insects that mass at the crown and suck sap until leaves wilt and blacken. Adults are almost impossible to spray effectively, so target the eggs instead: neat rows of shiny bronze eggs laid in the V between leaf veins on the underside. Scrape them off with a fingernail or lift them with a strip of tape twice a week and the population never builds.
For the adults, lay a board or a folded newspaper on the soil beside each plant in the evening. They shelter under it overnight and can be tipped into soapy water first thing. Aphids, the other common sap feeder, cluster on new growth and matter mainly because they spread mosaic viruses; a firm jet of water and a few weeks of patience while ladybirds arrive is usually enough.
Row cover over the young plants excludes beetles, squash bugs and vine borer moths at the stage when all three do the most harm. It must come off the moment the first flowers open, or you exclude the pollinators too and get no fruit at all.
Building a pest record that pays off
The most valuable thing you can write down about pests is the date each one first appeared, because these are seasonal insects that turn up at close to the same point every year in the same garden. Once you know your first borer moth flight or your first mildew spot, you can put the stem wrap or the first preventive spray on a week before it, which is the only timing that actually works.
Record which type suffered and where it sat. Over three seasons the pattern becomes clear: the shaded end of the bed gets mildew first, the cucumbers get wilt and the squash get borers. Note what you sprayed, on what date, and whether it made a visible difference within a week, so that next year you keep the two treatments that worked and drop the four that did not.
- Log the first sighting of each pest One line each: first mildew spot, first beetle, first borer frass, first squash bug eggs. These dates are the schedule for next year's preventive work.
- Note which plants you lost and to what Distinguish bacterial wilt from borer from drought using the stem test. A season of guessing teaches nothing; a season of correct diagnoses teaches everything.
- Track the bed position Cucurbit soil problems accumulate in place. Written positions let you keep three or four years between cucurbit crops in the same ground, which is what actually breaks the cycle.
