First work out which pansy orchid you own
Two very different plants are sold under this name, and almost every complaint about pansy orchids comes from treating one as the other. The flat-faced, velvety, pansy-like flowers belong to Miltoniopsis, which comes from Andean cloud forest in Colombia and Ecuador at three to six thousand feet. The starrier, more open flowers on longer sprays belong to the Brazilian Miltonia group, which grows lower and warmer in coastal forest.
You can tell them apart without a flower. Miltoniopsis makes a tight clump: flattened, single-leaved pseudobulbs pressed close together, the whole plant a soft gray-green with a bluish cast, leaves narrow and limp rather than stiff. Brazilian Miltonia is looser and yellower: two-leaved pseudobulbs spaced an inch or two (3 to 5 cm) apart along a visible creeping rhizome, foliage a hard yellow-green that stands up on its own.
The difference matters because it sets the ceiling temperature. Miltoniopsis stops growing above about 80F (27C) and starts shedding roots and blasting buds in the mid-eighties. Brazilian Miltonia takes 85F (29C) in stride and only objects above about 90F (32C). If you have the warmer plant, an ordinary sunroom will do. If you have the cool one, the whole growing plan is built around keeping it out of summer heat.

Bright shade, never direct sun
Both groups want the light level you would give a phalaenopsis rather than a cattleya: bright enough to cast a soft-edged shadow, with no beam of sun landing on the leaves at any point in the day. An east window is the natural home. A north window works in a bright room. A west or south window needs a sheer curtain or a position three to four feet (1 m) back from the glass.
Leaf color is the gauge and it reads quickly. A correctly lit Miltoniopsis is a light gray-green, sometimes with a faint pink blush at the leaf base. Push the light up and the foliage hardens, turns yellowish and develops reddish speckling; push it further and you get dry tan scorch patches that never heal. Too little light gives long, dark, floppy leaves and a plant that keeps growing but never flowers.
Under artificial light the plant is easy to satisfy. A grow light twelve to eighteen inches (30 to 45 cm) above the leaves, run twelve to fourteen hours a day, covers both groups. Because a fixture puts out heat as well as light, check the temperature at leaf level rather than at the far side of the room.
The hot months are the problem, not the cold ones
A Miltoniopsis will sit through a cool winter windowsill quite happily. What kills it is a run of days in the eighties with dry air, because the fine roots that this genus depends on cannot keep up with the water the leaves lose. The plant answers by dropping roots, and once the root system thins out the leaves pleat and the buds blast even though nothing looks wrong at the surface.
In a house with air conditioning this is easy: the plant goes wherever the room is coolest and stays there. Without it, look for a basement window, a north-facing room on the ground floor, a shaded porch that catches the evening breeze, or the coolest floor of the house. Moving the plant down to floor level in the hottest weeks buys several degrees for nothing.
Outdoors in summer works well if you have deep shade and cool nights: under a tree canopy, on the north side of a wall, or beneath a bench in a shaded frame. Bring the plant back in when nights start dropping below about 50F (10C), and check the undersides of the leaves and the gaps between pseudobulbs for scale and slugs before it comes inside.
Air movement is part of temperature control. A slow fan in the room lets the plant cool itself by evaporation and dries the tight leaf bases after watering, which is where rot starts. The leaves should stir gently, not flutter.
Humidity, and why grouping plants helps
Aim for 50 to 70 percent humidity. Cloud forest plants are used to air that is close to saturated for much of the day, and while they will accept less, dry air combined with warmth is exactly the combination that causes the pleated leaves this genus is famous for.
A humidity tray under the pot, filled with pebbles and topped up so the water sits below the pot base, lifts local humidity noticeably. Grouping several plants together does more than any single tray, because each plant transpires into the shared pocket of air. Misting the leaves is largely wasted effort: it raises humidity for minutes and leaves water sitting in the crown overnight if you do it late in the day.
In a hard winter with the heating on, humidity in a normal room can drop to 25 percent. That is the second seasonal danger point after summer heat. A small room humidifier near the plant, or moving it to a bathroom with a bright window, solves it without any change to watering.
