Why this orchid is watered differently from the rest
Pull a healthy pansy orchid out of its pot and the roots look wrong for an orchid: fine, white, hair-thin compared with the fat pencil roots of a cattleya or phalaenopsis. Those thin roots hold very little water and have almost no reserve. They come from an environment where the mix around them is damp every single day and the air is close to saturated.
That single anatomical fact drives everything. A cattleya can be bone dry for a week and shrug. A pansy orchid dries out once and loses a measurable share of its root tips, and every root tip lost is growth that will not happen this year. Nothing about the plant recovers quickly, because it only makes new roots when a new growth is expanding.
So the rule is the opposite of the usual orchid advice. Do not wait until the pot is dry. Water while the surface of the mix is just going from damp to barely moist, before any dryness reaches the middle of the pot. In practice that is every three to five days for a plant in fine bark in a warm room, and every seven to ten days in a cool winter room.
Reading the pot instead of counting days
Weight is the most reliable check. Lift the pot right after a thorough watering and again three days later, and the difference is obvious in the hand. Once you know what a freshly watered pot feels like, you can water on weight alone and never be wrong about it.
The second check is a wooden skewer pushed to the bottom of the pot and left there. Pull it out and look at the lower two inches (5 cm). Dark and cool means wait. Barely damp means water now. Dry and pale means you are already late and should expect some root loss.
Clear plastic pots make the whole question easy, which is why many growers use them for this genus. Green roots pressed against the wall with condensation in the pot means moist. Silvery-white roots and no condensation means water. A pot that stays soaking and dark for over a week means the mix has broken down and the plant needs repotting rather than a change of schedule.

Water quality and the salt problem
Thin roots are as sensitive to dissolved minerals as they are to drought. Hard tap water, softened water and heavily fertilized pots all leave salts behind as the water evaporates, and those salts concentrate at the root tips and burn them. The visible result is leaf tips that go brown and dry and keep creeping back, on a plant that is otherwise watered correctly.
Rainwater, distilled water or reverse osmosis water avoids the problem entirely and is worth the trouble for this genus specifically. If you use tap water, find out how hard it is; below about 150 parts per million total dissolved solids is workable, above 300 will cause trouble within a year. Never use water from a domestic softener, which trades calcium for sodium and makes matters worse.
Whatever water you use, flush the pot once a month. Run plain water through it for a full minute, several times the pot volume, letting it drain freely away. That single habit prevents most of the tip burn attributed to fertilizer and is more useful than any change in feeding rate.
Water in the morning, not the evening. The tight overlapping leaf bases of a pansy orchid hold water in the fold, and sitting wet overnight in cool air is how crown rot begins. If water pools in the center, tip the pot or dab it out with a corner of kitchen paper.
How to actually water it
The whole routine takes a couple of minutes and is worth doing properly every time. Half-watering a pansy orchid is worse than not watering it, because the wet upper layer encourages roots to grow where they will dry out first, while the core of the pot stays permanently dry and the roots there die back.
- Take the pot to the sink Watering in place with a small can wets only the top inch and leaves the core dry. Move the plant where you can run water through it freely and let it drain.
- Run tepid water through for thirty seconds Water at room temperature, never cold from the tap. Let it pour through the mix and out of the drainage holes until it is running clear and the pot feels heavy.
- Let it drain fully before it goes back Give it two or three minutes on the draining board. Standing water in a cachepot or saucer suffocates the fine roots within days, which is the fastest way to kill this genus.
- Check the crown Look into the center of each new growth. Any water sitting in the fold should be tipped out or blotted away before the plant returns to its position.
- Feed at a quarter strength, most waterings Use a balanced orchid fertilizer at a quarter of the label rate, on three waterings out of four, with plain water on the fourth to flush. Weak and frequent suits fine roots far better than a monthly full-strength dose.
Winter, summer and what changes
There is no dry rest for this genus. Unlike a dendrobium or a cattleya, a pansy orchid never stops needing moisture at the roots, and cutting water back sharply in winter is a common and damaging mistake. What changes is the interval, not the principle: cooler air and lower light simply mean the pot takes longer to dry, so you water less often but just as thoroughly.
Summer is where the interval shortens dramatically. A plant in a warm room with a fan running can go from freshly watered to worryingly light in three days. This is the season to check by weight every couple of days rather than trusting a schedule, and the season when a missed week does lasting harm.
Keep a note of how often you actually watered in each part of the year, alongside the room temperature. After one full cycle you will have a real interval for your own conditions, which is far more useful than any general figure, and it makes the following year's summer far less risky.
