How the flowering cycle actually runs
The bloom you see at the end of winter was decided the previous summer. Shoots extend from spring through midsummer, ripen through late summer, and set the small round flower buds along their length in autumn. Those buds sit tight and green through the cold months, swell noticeably a few weeks before they open, and then break into the dense yellow bottlebrush heads that give the plant its name. Individual heads last a couple of weeks; a well-set plant is in flower for four to six weeks.
Because the whole crop is made on one season of wood, the plant has no second chance. There is no summer rebloom to fall back on and no reserve of buds elsewhere. Whatever happens to that wood between midsummer and the following winter is what your bloom will be. This single fact explains almost every question people ask about mimosa flowering.
You can read the coming season in autumn. Run a hand along a shoot made that summer and you should feel small firm bumps along its length. If those shoots are smooth, or if the plant made only long soft whips with no bumps, there will be no flowers, and you will know months before spring.
The four common causes of no flowers
Work through these in order, because the first is by far the most frequent. In practice a mimosa that is genuinely healthy, in full sun, unpruned since flowering and not overfed will flower every year without any encouragement from you.

Frost and the bud crop
Mimosa buds are far more vulnerable than the plant itself. A mature plant may shrug off a night at 20F (-7C) and still lose every bud it was carrying, because the swelling buds in late winter have no cold tolerance left once they start to move. The result is a plant that leafs out normally in spring and simply skips its flowering year, which is often misread as a health problem.
The single most effective protection is a warm wall. Masonry on the sunny side absorbs heat through the day and releases it overnight, and it commonly lifts the temperature in the first foot or two (30-60 cm) of air by several degrees on a still, clear night. That margin is frequently the difference between a full bloom and none. It also shelters the plant from the wind that does the structural damage.
Where a hard freeze is forecast just as the buds are swelling, throwing a light row cover or an old sheet over a wall-trained or reduced plant overnight is worth doing and genuinely works. Remove it in the morning. Do not use plastic sheeting directly on the buds; where it touches, it conducts cold and does more harm than leaving the plant bare.
Feeding for flowers, not for growth
This plant fixes its own nitrogen through root nodules and does not want any more from you. Nitrogen feeding is the second most reliable way to get a mimosa that grows twelve feet (3.7 m) in a season and does not flower at all. Lawn feed spread near the plant, general purpose granular fertilizer, or an annual mulch of rich manure all produce the same result: enormous soft shoots that never ripen enough to set buds.
If a plant in poor thin soil looks genuinely starved, use a low-nitrogen feed with potassium in it in spring, once. Potassium promotes flower and wood ripening rather than extension. In ordinary ground, feed nothing. A mimosa on poor gritty soil will nearly always outflower the same plant on rich loam.
Watering follows the same logic. Keep a young plant going through its first two summers, then stop. Established plants are drought tolerant and a plant kept lush by summer irrigation keeps extending instead of ripening its wood, which pushes bud set later and later until frost catches it.
A plant that suddenly flowers spectacularly after a dry, hot summer is not a coincidence. Stress that stops extension growth early lets the wood ripen fully, and fully ripened wood carries the heaviest bud crop.
After the flowers fade
Deadheading is not necessary for a plant of any size, and on a tall one it is impossible. Spent flower heads dry to a dull brown fluff and drop on their own within a few weeks. What matters far more is what you do to the plant in that same window: this is the only safe time to prune, and cutting now is what produces the shoots that carry next year's crop.
If the plant sets seed pods after flowering, and it often does, strip them where you can reach. They take energy that would otherwise go into new growth, and mimosa seed germinates readily wherever it lands. In several mediterranean-climate regions this plant has escaped gardens and become a serious weed, so removing pods before they open is worth the effort on principle as well as for the plant.
Record the date the first flowers opened and the date the last faded, every year. Those two dates are the most useful things you can know about your plant: they tell you exactly when your pruning window opens, they show you how a cold or mild winter shifts the whole cycle, and after three or four years they let you predict the bloom well enough to plan around it.
