Cold damage is the main hazard
This is not a reliably hardy plant. A mature specimen may take a night down around 20F (-7C) and come through it, but a longer spell, a cold wind or a sudden drop after mild weather will kill wood, and a genuinely hard winter can take a big established tree to the ground. That last outcome is common enough that it should be part of your plan rather than a surprise.
Frost damage has a recognizable pattern. Damage starts at the shoot tips and works downward, it is worst on the windward and most exposed side, and the affected wood goes brown and dry rather than soft. Leaves hang on the plant, brown and crisp, instead of dropping cleanly. Bark on badly hit stems splits lengthwise and lifts away from the wood beneath.
Do not cut anything in the weeks after a freeze. What looks dead in late winter frequently pushes new growth once the soil warms, and cutting early both removes recoverable wood and exposes fresh cuts to further cold. Wait until spring is well underway, scrape a little bark with a thumbnail, and cut back to where the tissue underneath is green.

Root rot and wet feet
More mimosas are lost to wet soil than to cold, and the two are usually blamed the wrong way round. A plant in ground that stays saturated from autumn through spring will have roots rotting all winter, and it collapses in spring when the leaves start demanding water that damaged roots cannot supply. Because the collapse comes after a cold season, the frost gets the blame.
The signs are distinguishable. Root rot produces a plant that is uniformly dull, pale and limp rather than damaged from the tips inward, and it wilts in spite of wet soil. Dig a small hole a foot (30 cm) out from the trunk and feel the soil and the roots. Healthy mimosa roots are firm and pale inside; rotted ones are dark, soft and pull apart between the fingers with a sour smell.
There is no treatment once roots have gone. What you can do is prevent it, and the prevention is all at planting: sharp drainage, a low mound in heavy ground, no watering of established plants, and no thick mulch piled against the trunk. If a site has killed one mimosa by rot it will kill the next one, so change the site or the drainage rather than the plant.
Pests, which are the smaller problem
Scale insects are the pest you are most likely to meet. They appear as small brown or waxy bumps sitting flat along the shoots and leaf stalks, they do not move, and the first thing most people notice is not the insects but the sticky honeydew below them and the black sooty mold growing on it. A light infestation is cosmetic; a heavy one weakens shoots and reduces flowering.
On a reduced or wall-trained plant you can deal with scale directly: rub the bumps off with a cloth, prune out badly encrusted shoots at the post-flowering window, and wash the sooty mold off the leaves with plain water. On a large tree, treatment is not practical and is rarely necessary, because natural predators usually bring the population back down within a season or two.
Spider mite shows as fine pale stippling on the leaflets with delicate webbing underneath, and it is almost entirely a problem of plants under glass or in a hot dry corner with no air movement. Both problems increase sharply on plants under stress, so a well-sited plant that is not overfed and not irrigated into autumn has fewer of them than a pampered one.
Do not spray a mimosa in flower. The blooms are heavily worked by bees and other pollinators in late winter when very little else is open, and that early forage matters more than a cosmetic pest problem does.
Deciding when a plant is finished
Mimosa is short lived even at its best, and there is a point where the right decision is removal rather than another rescue. The clearest signal is movement at the root plate: soil cracked or lifted around the trunk, or a new lean after a storm. Anchorage does not recover. A plant in that state over anything valuable should come out, or at minimum be reduced very hard immediately.
Extensive dieback in the crown that keeps coming back year after year despite cutting to green wood is the second signal. It usually means either the roots are compromised or the site is simply too cold, and each successive winter takes more than the summer puts back. Two consecutive seasons of net decline is enough evidence.
Before replanting the same spot, deal with the reason. If cold killed it, plant against a warm wall and commit to holding the plant low. If wet killed it, mound the new plant or move to better ground. If wind took it out, choose a sheltered position and prune annually from the first year. Planting the same plant in the same conditions produces the same result.

- Check the roots before blaming the cold Dig a small hole a foot (30 cm) from the trunk. Dark, soft roots and a sour smell mean rot, and no amount of pruning will help.
- Inspect the base after every storm Look for cracked or lifted soil and any change in lean. Movement here is structural failure, not a wound to be treated.
- Record what happened and when Log the lowest temperature you saw, the dates of the cold spell, and which parts of the plant were damaged. Over a few winters this shows you exactly what your site can carry.
Keeping useful records
Note the coldest night each winter and what the plant looked like afterward, including which side of the plant took the damage. After three or four winters this tells you plainly whether your site is marginal for this species and how much shelter would change the outcome, which is worth far more than any general hardiness figure.
Record the first date you see scale or sooty mold each year and where on the plant it started. Infestations tend to begin in the same sheltered spot each season, and knowing where to look means you find it while rubbing it off is still an option rather than a pruning job.
Photograph the base of the trunk each year at the same time, from the same position. Root plate movement is gradual and almost invisible between one look and the next, but obvious in a series of pictures, and it is the single best warning that a plant has become unsafe.
