Bright, but never direct sun
Peperomia grows on the forest floor and on the sides of trees, under a canopy, so it is adapted to steady, filtered light rather than to full exposure. A few hours of direct summer sun through glass bleaches the leaf surface to a dull, papery beige, and the marking on patterned leaves washes out and does not come back.
Too little light is the opposite failure and easier to miss, because the plant does not look damaged. It simply stretches: the gaps between leaf pairs lengthen, the new leaves come out smaller and thinner than the old ones, and the whole plant leans. That stretching is permanent on the stems already formed, so act on it as soon as you see it.

Testing a spot before you commit to it
Your eyes adjust so completely that a room always feels brighter than it measures. Use a physical check instead of an impression.
- Look at the shadow of your hand Hold a hand a foot above where the pot would stand, at midday with the lights off. A shadow with a soft but clearly readable edge is right. A hard black shadow means direct sun and scorch; no shadow at all means the plant will stretch.
- Check the height, not just the spot A pot on the floor beside a window receives far less light than the same pot on a table at sill height. Raising a struggling plant two feet often fixes it without moving it across the room.
- Compare a new leaf with an old one A month after moving the plant, hold the newest fully open leaf against one from before the move. Equal or larger, with the same depth of color, means the position works.
- Turn the pot a quarter each week Peperomia leans toward light strongly. A quarter turn weekly keeps the crown symmetrical and stops the plant tipping its own pot over as it grows.
Move a plant to brighter light over about a week rather than in one step. Leaves grown in shade scorch in a single afternoon if put straight into a bright window.
Temperature and the limits it will take
Peperomia is comfortable in exactly the range people keep their homes, which is why it succeeds indoors and fails outdoors in most climates. It grows steadily between 64F and 79F (18C and 26C), slows below 59F (15C) and stops entirely below about 54F (12C).
Cold on its own is survivable for short spells. Cold combined with wet compost is not: below 50F (10C) the roots cannot take up water, the compost stays saturated for weeks, and the stems rot at the base. If the room drops that far, the answer is to keep the plant almost completely dry rather than to try to warm it.

Drafts, radiators and the window at night
The two positions that cause most winter losses look perfectly reasonable by day. A sill in front of single glazing can be twenty degrees colder at three in the morning than the room behind it, and leaves touching cold glass overnight develop translucent patches that turn brown. Pull the plant back a foot from the glass at night, or draw the curtain on the room side of it rather than trapping it against the window.
The other is a spot in the direct stream of warm air from a heater or air conditioning unit. The constant dry blast pulls water out of the leaf faster than the small root system replaces it, and the leaf edges go crisp and brown while the compost is still damp. Neither problem is about humidity in general; both are about a single moving air stream hitting the plant.

Moving it through the year
The right spot changes twice a year, and both moves are worth making deliberately. In late autumn, bring the plant closer to the window: light levels indoors fall far more than people expect, and a position that was ample in summer leaves the plant stretching by midwinter. At the same time, move it out of reach of cold glass at night.
In late spring, do the reverse. Pull it back from the glass or add a curtain layer before the sun gets high enough to strike the leaves directly. Making that move before the first hot week is much easier than repairing bleached leaves afterward, since scorched tissue never recovers and has to be grown out.
Keep a short note of where the plant stood in each season and how it responded. After one year you will know which two positions in your home actually work, and the yearly move becomes a five minute job rather than a guess.
