Repotting a Peperomia: Pot Size, Compost and Why Bigger Is Worse

A peperomia has a small root system and resents a large pot. Repot rarely, move up one size only, and use a gritty mix.

Why an oversized pot kills a peperomia

The root system of a peperomia is genuinely small in proportion to the plant above it, and it is shallow. In the wild many of these plants grow in leaf litter in tree forks with almost no soil, and that is what the roots are built for: a thin layer of coarse, airy material that wets and dries quickly.

Put that root system into a generous pot and most of the compost has no roots in it at all. Nothing removes the water from that dead volume, so it stays saturated for weeks after every watering. The roots at the edge of the rootball sit permanently in it, suffocate, and the rot travels inward and up into the stem base. This is why a peperomia repotted into a pot two sizes up so often declines within a season while the owner is doing everything else correctly.

A peperomia is happiest slightly pot bound. Being cramped is not a problem worth solving; being in wet compost is.

When it actually needs repotting

Most peperomias need repotting every two or three years, and some never need more than fresh compost in the same pot. Look for real evidence rather than repotting on a routine.

Choosing the pot

Move up exactly one size, which means about an inch (2 to 3 cm) more across. There is no benefit at all in going further and considerable risk in it.

Prefer a shallow pot to a deep one at the same width. The deep base of a tall pot is exactly the volume that stays wet, and peperomia roots will never reach it.

The compost to use

Ordinary houseplant compost straight from the bag holds too much water for a peperomia. Open it up so that water passes through freely and air returns to the pot within a day or two of watering. A useful mix is roughly two parts houseplant compost to one part perlite and one part fine orchid bark; a cactus and succulent compost with a handful of extra perlite works just as well.

Wet the mix before you use it. Dry peat based compost repels water, so a plant potted into it can be watered thoroughly and still have dry roots, and the first sign of that is a plant that wilts a week after repotting. Dampen the mix in a bucket until it holds together when squeezed but releases no water, then pot with it.

How to do it, and when

Repot in late spring or early summer, once the room is reliably above 68F (20C) and new growth is visibly moving. Repotting breaks fine roots, and the plant can only replace them while it is warm and actively growing. The same job done in late autumn leaves cut roots sitting in cool damp compost for months, which is how a routine repot turns into base rot.

  1. Let it dry out first Repot a plant that is on the dry side. A dry rootball comes out cleanly and crumbles away from the roots, while a saturated one tears them as it falls apart.
  2. Tease away only the loose compost Remove the old compost from the outside of the rootball with your fingers, but leave the core intact. There is no need to wash the roots bare unless you are dealing with rot.
  3. Keep the crown at the same depth The base of the stems must sit at the compost surface, exactly as before. Burying the crown even half an inch deeper is a direct invitation to stem rot.
  4. Firm lightly and water once Tap the pot to settle the mix rather than pressing it down hard, then give one thorough watering to close the air gaps around the roots.
  5. Then leave it alone Bright shade, no feed for six weeks, and no water until the compost is dry two inches down. A freshly repotted plant has less root and more compost than before, so it needs less water, not more.

Do not repot and cut back on the same day. Two shocks together stall the plant for weeks. Do one, wait a fortnight, then do the other.

Keep a record of pot size and date

Write down the date of each repot, the pot size you moved from and to, and the mix you used. Because peperomia is repotted so rarely, this is exactly the kind of detail no one remembers two years later, and without it you cannot tell whether a plant that is struggling is in a pot that is three years old or three months old.

The same note tells you whether your mix is right. If the plant needs water every four days in summer the mix is too open for your routine; if the compost is still damp two weeks after watering in a warm room, add more perlite at the next repot. One line per repot is enough to make that judgement instead of guessing.
