The shape of the year
Unlike most orchids sold as houseplants, a moth orchid never goes dormant. It has no pseudobulbs to store water and no season in which it drops its leaves, which means it is never dried off completely and never stops needing light. What it does have is a cycle, and understanding that cycle is what turns a plant that flowers once into a plant that flowers every year.
The cycle runs roughly like this. A plant finishes flowering and immediately puts its energy into new leaves and roots, which is the growth phase and by far the most important part of the year. It coasts through the hottest part of summer, when heat above about 85F (29C) slows everything down. Then, as nights cool in autumn, the drop in night temperature triggers a flower spike from between the lower leaves. The spike takes two or three months to extend and set buds, and the flowers open and hold through the coolest months.
That timetable shifts with your conditions and with the individual plant, and in a house held at one temperature all year it never happens at all. The point of thinking about the year in stages is not to follow dates but to know which job matters when: build the plant after flowering, protect it in heat, chill it in autumn, and leave it alone in bloom.

Spring: rebuild the plant
Once the last flower has dropped, the growing season begins. Decide what to do with the spike: cut it above the second or third node if the plant is strong and you want a second flush, or take it off at the base if you would rather have a better display next season. A brown, hollow spike comes off at the base regardless.
This is the repotting window. If the bark crushes soft and wet between your fingers, or the plant has been in the same pot for two years, repot now into fresh coarse bark while the plant is about to make new roots. New root tips pushing from the stem are the perfect signal, because they will grow straight into the new medium.
Start feeding once a new leaf is visibly moving, using a balanced orchid fertilizer at a quarter to half the strength on the label, roughly every second or third watering. Flush the pot with plain water every fourth watering to wash accumulated salts out of the bark. Watering intervals shorten as light and warmth increase, so go back to checking the root color rather than following the winter rhythm.
Summer: protect it through the heat
Summer is not the growth peak people expect. Above about 85F (29C) a moth orchid slows down, and a plant in a hot conservatory or on a sunny sill can effectively stall for weeks. The jobs in high summer are all protective.
Move the plant back from south and west windows, or put a sheer curtain between it and the glass. The sun that was welcome in winter will scorch leaves within a single afternoon in midsummer, and the resulting bleached patch is a permanent scar. Bright shade is the target all summer.
Water more often, because bark in a warm dry room can go from soaked to silver in four or five days, but keep the same technique: soak through, drain fully, and never let the crown stay wet. Raise humidity if the room is dry, using a tray of damp pebbles or a group of plants together rather than misting, which wets the crown. Above all, get air moving. Warm still humid air is where fungal spots and rot begin, and a fan on low across the room prevents most of it.
Ease off feeding while growth is slow. A plant that is not growing does not use fertilizer, and the unused salt stays in the bark.
If you stand your plant outdoors for the summer, keep it in full shade, out of rain that would fill the crown, and bring it in well before nights fall below 55F (13C). Check carefully for slugs and scale before it comes back into the house.
Autumn: the cool nights that set the spike
This is the decisive few weeks of the moth orchid year. A new flower spike is initiated by a sustained drop in night temperature, roughly two to four weeks of nights at 55 to 60F (13 to 16C) with days still around 75F (24C). Without that swing, a perfectly healthy plant will keep making leaves indefinitely and never spike, which is the single most common reason a moth orchid does not reflower in a centrally heated home.
Arrange it however suits your house. An unheated bedroom, a bright porch, a spare room with the radiator off, or a sheltered shaded spot outdoors while nights are still above 55F (13C) all work. The plant still needs its usual bright indirect light through the cool spell; darkness is not part of the trigger. Water a little less, since a cooler plant drinks more slowly, and be especially careful about a wet crown, because cool damp conditions are exactly what rot needs.
Then watch the base of the plant. A flower spike emerges from between two lower leaves as a flattened, blunt, mitten-shaped green tip that angles outwards and upwards. A new root, which people constantly mistake for it, is round in section, smooth and glossy at the tip, and heads down or straight out. Once the spike is an inch (2.5 cm) long the trigger has worked and you can return the plant to normal room warmth.
Winter: spike, bud and flower
From the appearance of the spike tip, reckon on two to three months before the first flower opens. The spike extends steadily, then pauses and forms a row of small green buds along its upper half, then the buds swell over several weeks and open in sequence from the bottom up.
Stake the spike while it is still short and flexible. Push a thin cane into the bark clear of the roots and clip the spike loosely to it every few inches (10 cm), leaving the top eight inches (20 cm) free so the arch that carries the flowers can form naturally. A spike staked rigidly to the tip flowers in an ugly vertical line, and one left unstaked often bends under the weight and snaps.
During bud development, keep everything steady. Do not repot, do not move the plant to a new position, keep it away from drafts and radiators, keep ripening fruit out of the room, and do not let the bark go bone dry. Buds are far more sensitive to a change than open flowers are, and the response to almost any shock is to yellow and drop.
Once the flowers are open, the plant needs very little. A cool room extends the display considerably, often to three months or more, while a warm room shortens it. Keep feeding light, keep watering by root color, and enjoy it. The next round of work starts when the last flower drops.
What to write down
The moth orchid year only becomes predictable once you have measured your own. Record four dates every cycle: the day the last flower dropped, the day you began the cool nights, the day the spike tip first appeared, and the day the first flower opened. Those four numbers give you the two intervals that matter, cool nights to spike and spike to flower, and after one season you can plan backwards from when you want the plant in bloom.
Alongside those, note the repotting date and medium, the date you start and stop feeding, and how many new leaves the plant made over the year. Two or three new leaves a year is a healthy mature plant; one means it is short of light or root, and that will show up as a poor spike long before you would otherwise notice.
Keep the notes per plant rather than in general. If you grow several, they will not all follow the same schedule, and the differences between them, on the same windowsill and in the same room, are exactly what teaches you what your conditions are doing.
