Overview
Gold Nugget was bred at the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station for a short, cool season and took an All-America Selections award in 1966. Its parentage is (Tapleys Bush x Banquet) x Banquet. The plant is a true bush with no running vines, so it fits northern gardens and small plots, and it sets five to eight small round fruit of 1 to 3 pounds with a red-orange, hard shell-type rind. The flesh is fine-grained and sweet, close to buttercup in character but ready weeks sooner. Sow directly into warm soil after frost and space closely. Harvest when the rind resists a thumbnail, cure briefly, and it stores well through winter.
