Overview

Long of Naples, or Lunga di Napoli, is a Cucurbita moschata heirloom from the Campania region that grows enormous cylindrical fruit: commonly 20 to 35 pounds and 2 to 3 feet long, occasionally far longer. Deep green at harvest, the rind turns tan in storage over dense, deep orange flesh that tastes like butternut but creamier and less watery. You can also pick immature fruit at 12 to 18 inches and use it as a firm, flavorful summer squash. Being a moschata it handles heat and humidity well, resists vine borers and tolerates powdery mildew better than pepo squashes. Vines run 12 to 15 feet, so allow 8 to 12 feet per plant or provide a strong trellis. Cured fruit keeps 6 to 12 months.
