Overview

Bugle, also called PMR Butternut, is an open-pollinated butternut bred by M. M. Jahn at Cornell University and released in 1999. Its fruit is very close to Waltham but about half a pound lighter, tan with a long neck and dense, sweet orange flesh. The point of the variety is powdery mildew resistance: the leaves stay green under heavy mildew pressure, so plants keep producing quality fruit through a humid late summer when susceptible butternuts have collapsed. Vines are somewhat more compact than older butternuts. Sow directly into warm soil after frost, let the rind harden fully, cure one to two weeks, and it stores several months. About 80 days.
