Overview
Sucrine du Berry comes from the Berry region of central France and is related to Musquée de Provence, though it stays smaller and ripens sooner, which suits gardens with a shorter summer. The vines carry oblong, bell-shaped fruit of 3 to 5 pounds, tan-orange outside and deep orange within; the flesh is dense, fairly dry and sweet, often compared with chestnut. Sow directly once the ground is warm, give the spreading vines wide hills, and ease off on water as the fruit ripens so sugars concentrate. After picking, set the squash out in sunshine for a week or so to harden the rind before storing.
