Overview
Rat Tail, also written Rat's Tail or Rattail, is a radish grown for its seed pods rather than its small, inedible root. Plants climb to 4 or 5 feet, flower, and then set masses of slender green pods, sometimes tinged purple, 3 to 6 inches long with a snappy, mildly pungent radish taste. It takes summer heat that would send a root radish to seed, so it produces when others fail. Sow half an inch deep after frost, let the plants bolt, and pick pods while crisp and before seeds fill, checking daily since they turn fibrous. Eat raw, pickled, stir-fried, or in Indian chutneys.
