Overview
Nero Tondo (the name is Italian for round black) is a refined Black Spanish radish sold by Johnny's, selected for rounder, more uniform roots and better bolt resistance than the old strain. Roots are large, 2 to 4 inches, with matte black skin and crisp, hot white flesh that turns earthy and sweet when roasted or braised. Sow from mid spring through fall once soil is above 60 F to prevent bolting, though roots maturing in cool weather taste and store best; it is not advised for spring sowing in muck soils. About 50 days, and it keeps in the ground and in the cellar much longer than a spring radish.
