Overview
Tillage Radish Cover Crop is a daikon-type radish grown not for the table but for the soil. Its big, strong roots drive deep into hardpan and heavy clay; after winter kills the plants, the roots decay to mush and then dry out, leaving channels that improve tilth and let the soil breathe and dry faster, a real help in a wet spring. Sow 4 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost (late August to early September in zones 5 to 7). Seeding rate is about 1 ounce per 125 square feet, a quarter pound per 400 and a half pound per 800. Avoid following it directly with brassica crops; give the bed until later in the season or the next year.
