The pests that go for the leaf
Daikon is a brassica, so it gets brassica pests. The dangerous window is the first month, when the plant has only a few small leaves and losing any of them directly reduces the final root size. After the canopy has closed, most leaf damage is cosmetic.
Flea beetle is the first to arrive, often within a day of emergence, and leaves the seed leaves peppered with tiny round holes. Cabbage caterpillars follow and chew large irregular holes from the leaf edges inward. Aphids colonise the growing point and the undersides of young leaves, and their sticky honeydew then goes black with sooty mold.
The single most effective measure is insect netting laid on the day of sowing and tucked into the soil at the edges. It stops flea beetle, cabbage white butterflies and most aphid arrivals in one action, and it costs nothing to maintain.

Very dark, soft, oversized leaves are an aphid magnet. If you get aphids every year, the answer is usually less nitrogen at the base dressing rather than more spraying.
The trouble that happens underground
Below ground the problems are harder to spot because the leaves often look fine until you pull the root. Cabbage root maggot tunnels into the root, leaving brown winding channels just under the skin and sometimes causing sudden wilting in warm weather. Wireworms leave narrow round holes straight into the flesh.
Soft rot turns the crown or shoulder into a wet, foul smelling collapse, and it takes hold where the crown has been buried too deeply, where soil sits waterlogged, or where a frost damaged shoulder has thawed. Once a root is rotting it cannot be saved; lift it and take it off the bed so the rot does not spread along the row.

Cut a suspect root lengthwise before deciding what caused the problem. Tunnels mean an insect, uniform dark specks mean a soil condition, and a dry hollow center means it was simply left too long.
Forked, stunted and misshapen roots
These are not diseases. A daikon grows as one tip, and anything that stops that tip transfers growth into side roots, which then thicken. Stones and clods split the root into two clean legs. Unrotted manure or a fertilizer band scorches the tip and produces a short blunt root covered in hairy side roots. A compacted layer stops the root dead and it swells sideways into a stubby cone.
Root disturbance in the first weeks does the same thing, which is why daikon is never transplanted and why thinning is done by pulling carefully while holding the soil around the plant you keep. Deep hoeing near the stations in the first month causes the same damage.
None of this can be corrected once the crop is growing, so treat every forked root as information for next season. Dig down at the spot and you will usually find the stone or the lump still sitting there.
Splitting, hollow centers and bolting
Splitting is a water problem. The root stops expanding in a dry spell, then swells rapidly when heavy rain arrives, and the skin cracks from the shoulder down. Even moisture through the bulking period, helped by a light mulch between the rows, prevents almost all of it.
A hollow, dry, spongy center is a maturity problem. Past its proper harvest window the root's core cells expand faster than they can fill, and the texture goes from crisp to pithy. Late nitrogen and hot weather both accelerate it. The cure is to harvest on time and to harvest progressively rather than leaving the whole bed standing.
Bolting is a temperature and daylength problem. A young plant that sits through a cold spell and then meets lengthening days will run to flower, and once the flower stem is up the root turns woody. It is mostly a spring sowing issue, and the reliable answer is to move the main sowing to late summer so the plant bulks as the days shorten.

Rotation, hygiene and keeping notes
Most soil borne daikon trouble builds up where brassicas follow brassicas. Leave three or four years between brassica crops on the same ground, and that includes cabbage, kale, turnip, mustard and salad radish, not just daikon. Clear old leaves and rotting roots off the bed at the end of the season rather than digging them in, because they carry pests and disease into the next crop.
Write down what you found and where. The date you first saw each pest, the row position of every forked or rotten root, and the weather in the week before any splitting appeared. Two seasons of that turns vague impressions into a clear map of which end of the bed drains badly and which pest arrives at which stage, and it is the only way to know whether a change you made actually worked.
