Acid soil is not optional
A rhododendron feeds efficiently between about pH 4.5 and 5.5. In that range it takes up iron and manganese without effort and the foliage stays a deep, even green. Above roughly pH 6.0 those nutrients convert to forms the fine roots cannot absorb, and the plant starves in soil that is chemically full of what it needs.
The symptom is distinctive. The leaf blade fades to pale yellow while the veins stay sharply dark green, so the leaf reads as a green net over a yellow ground, and it starts on the youngest leaves at the shoot tips because iron does not move around inside the plant. Even yellowing including the veins, starting on the oldest leaves, is a different problem: nitrogen shortage or waterlogged roots.
Test the soil before treating anything. Take the sample four inches (10 cm) down, past the mulch layer, which otherwise skews the reading acid. A ten-minute kit test settles which of two opposite treatments you need, and on chalk or limestone ground it tells you honestly that a container of acidic potting mix is the better plan than a lifetime of sulfur.

Wood ash, mushroom compost, spent builders sand, concrete washings and lawn feed drifting off a nearby lawn all push soil alkaline. A plant that yellows two years after a new path was laid beside it has usually been limed by the path.
Water: how much, and why rainwater matters
Hard tap water carries dissolved calcium, and every can of it leaves a little behind. In open ground on acid soil that hardly matters over a season or two. In a container, or in a small pocket of imported ericaceous soil, it steadily raises the pH until the plant yellows in compost that started out perfect. A water butt solves this more reliably than any additive sold to correct it.
Rainwater collected off a roof is fine for rhododendrons; the small amount of debris it carries is irrelevant. If you run out and have to use the tap, use it and then compensate with an acidic mulch and an annual pH test rather than alternating anxiously between the two. Consistency of moisture matters more than perfection of chemistry.
For quantity, think deep and infrequent rather than little and often. A thorough soak that wets the full eight to ten inches (20 to 25 cm) of the root zone, once or twice a week in dry weather, keeps the whole root mat working. A daily sprinkle wets the mulch and evaporates, and trains what roots there are to sit even nearer the surface.
- Check by finger, not by eye Push a finger through the mulch and two inches (5 cm) into the soil over the root ball. Damp mulch on dry soil is the commonest misreading, and it is why plants die in beds that look watered.
- Soak deeply and slowly Let a hose trickle at the base for several minutes, or empty two full cans slowly, so the water sinks rather than runs off. On a dried-out plant, water twice an hour apart.
- Use rainwater on anything in a pot Containers are where hard water does real damage. If a potted plant has yellowed on tap water, repot into fresh acidic potting mix and switch to a butt rather than trying to correct the old compost.
- Keep the mulch topped up Two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of bark, leaf mold or conifer needles across the whole root spread, renewed annually. It holds moisture, keeps the soil cool and breaks down slightly acid.
- Water before the ground freezes Evergreen leaves keep losing water all winter. A deep soak in late autumn, and again in mild dry spells, prevents the brown crisping that most people mistake for frost damage.
Feeding, lightly and once
Rhododendrons come from thin woodland soils and they are not hungry. One application of an acid-plant or ericaceous fertilizer as the flowers fade is enough for a plant in the ground, timed for exactly the moment the shrub starts building the shoots that will carry next year's buds. Containers and very sandy soil justify a second light feed in early summer; nothing else does.
General-purpose garden fertilizer is the wrong tool twice over. Most of it is neutral or alkaline, and most of it is nitrogen-heavy, which pushes soft leafy growth at the expense of flower buds. A shrub that grows strongly and flowers poorly next to a well-fed lawn is usually being fed by the lawn.
Stop feeding early. Anything applied within about eight weeks of your first expected frost forces soft late shoots that will not harden in time, and those are precisely the shoots carrying next year's flower buds. Late nitrogen costs you flowers twice: once to the frost and once to the leafy growth.
Leaf roll, and other things that look alarming
Rhododendron leaves roll into tight downward tubes in hard frost. This is a deliberate mechanism to cut water loss while the roots cannot draw from frozen ground, and the leaves unroll again as the temperature climbs. It is not damage and needs no action. The same rolling in warm weather means the opposite thing, that the plant is genuinely short of water, and then it needs a deep soak immediately.
Old leaves yellowing and dropping from the inside of the bush after flowering is normal. Evergreen rhododendrons hold leaves for two or three years and shed the oldest in a batch, and as long as the outer and newest foliage is green there is nothing wrong. Yellowing that starts on the newest growth is the one that matters.
A silvery or bronzed cast to the upper leaf surface, with fine stippling, means something is feeding underneath, and a sticky, sooty film means insects above. Both are dealt with in the pests guide; the point here is that they are patterned and localised, while nutrient and water problems are smooth and even across the leaf.
Record the soil pH with the date you measured it, the date you last fed, and the date you first saw yellowing. All three are invisible by the time the consequence shows, and a shrub that yellows again two years later is only diagnosable if you know what the numbers were last time.
