Planting a Rhododendron: Soak the Root Ball and Set It High

A rhododendron root ball comes out of the pot shallow, dense and usually bone dry in the middle. Soak it, tease it open and plant it proud of the soil, or it never roots out.

The root ball is the whole problem

Pick up a container rhododendron and feel the weight. Nine times out of ten it is lighter than it should be, because the peat-based mix at the center has dried past the point where water will re-wet it. Pour a can over the top and the water runs down the gap between compost and pot wall, out of the drainage holes, and the middle of the ball stays as dry as it was. The plant looks fine on the bench because the outer inch is damp.

The roots themselves are a solid felt of hair-fine threads, almost all of it in the top eight to ten inches (20 to 25 cm) of soil, wound tightly round the inside of the pot. There is no tap root and nothing reaching down for water. What you are planting is a dense disc that behaves like a brick, not like soil.

Put that brick straight into the ground and two things happen. Rain sheds off its surface into the looser backfill around it, so the plant stays thirsty in ground that is visibly damp, and the circling roots keep circling instead of striking outward. The shrub survives a season on what it had, declines through the second, and dies of drought in wet soil while everyone blames the winter.

A rhododendron that dies within two years of planting has almost always died of a dry root ball or a buried crown. Both faults are made in the ten minutes before the plant goes in the ground, and neither is visible afterwards.

Soaking and opening the ball

Soaking is not a rinse. Take the plant out of its pot and stand the whole root ball in a bucket or trug of water, weighting it down if it floats, and leave it until air stops bubbling up. On a badly dried ball that takes twenty to thirty minutes, and the bubbles are the only reliable signal that the center has taken water. Rainwater is better than hard tap water, though for a single soak either will do.

Then open it up. Rub the sides and the base hard with your fingers or a hand fork until the outer roots let go of one another and hang loose, and on anything genuinely pot-bound draw a knife down the sides in three or four shallow cuts and slice a thin disc off the bottom. It feels destructive. It is not: those fine roots regenerate readily, and roots left circling stay circling for the life of the plant.

Work in shade and keep the ball wet while you do it. Rhododendron feeder roots are so fine that a few minutes of sun and wind on an exposed ball kills the outer layer, which is the part you most want growing away into the new soil.

  1. Submerge until the bubbles stop Stand the bare root ball in a bucket of water, hold it under, and wait. Twenty to thirty minutes is normal for a dry peat-based ball. If bubbles are still rising, the center has not taken water yet.
  2. Tease the outer roots free Rub the sides and base until the matted surface roots hang loose. On a pot-bound plant, make three or four shallow vertical knife cuts and take a thin slice off the base to break the circling pattern.
  3. Dig wide, not deep Two to three times the width of the ball and no deeper than the ball is tall, so the plant sits on firm undug ground. Roughen the sides of the hole; the roots travel sideways, not down.
  4. Mix acid material through the backfill Blend composted bark, leaf mold or acidic potting mix into the soil you removed, roughly one part to two. Do not backfill with pure compost, which makes a sump that holds water against the roots.
  5. Set it an inch or two proud The top of the ball should finish level with the soil or one to two inches (3 to 5 cm) above it, higher still on clay. Firm with your hands only, then water in heavily to close the gaps.
  6. Mulch and keep it off the stems Two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) of bark or leaf mold across the full width of the root spread, pulled back a good inch from the stem bases so the crown stays dry.

Depth, drainage and where it goes

Burying the crown kills rhododendrons slowly. Those fine roots need air as much as water, and soil piled over the stem bases holds wet against bark that cannot take it. The plant goes off color, grows a little less each year, and sheds leaves from the inside, and because it takes two or three years nobody connects it to planting day. Planting high is the single cheapest insurance you can buy.

The position wants dappled shade or morning sun with cover through the hottest hours, sheltered from wind. Fine surface roots cannot replace water fast enough to keep up with a drying wind, and in cold regions a winter gale pulls water out of the evergreen leaves while the ground is frozen and the roots can supply none. Shelter is worth more than an extra hour of light.

Keep well away from fresh concrete, rendered walls and new paving, which leach lime into the soil for years, and away from the foot of a slope where cold air and standing water both collect. Large shallow-rooted trees are a mixed blessing: high canopy is ideal, but a maple or a birch will take the same top few inches of soil and water that the rhododendron needs.

The first year, and what to write down

Until roots grow out of the original ball, the plant is drinking from a volume of soil no larger than the pot it arrived in. Water deeply once or twice a week through the whole first growing season regardless of rainfall, and check by pushing a finger into the ball itself rather than into the bed beside it. The bed can be damp while the ball is dry, which is exactly the failure you were trying to prevent.

Do not feed at planting. Fertilizer against freshly torn feeder roots does harm rather than good, and the plant has nothing to spend it on while it is rebuilding. Wait until the flowers fade the following spring. If the shrub is in flower when you plant it and you want it established quickly, snap the trusses off and accept the missed display.

Write down the planting date, the exact position, and whether the ball was dry when it came out of the pot. Rhododendrons transplant well for many years because that compact root mat lifts almost intact, so knowing which plants were moved and when is what lets you judge later whether a sulking shrub is still settling in or genuinely in the wrong place.

Note how many hours of direct summer sun the spot actually receives, measured rather than guessed. Shade patterns change as neighboring trees grow or come down, and that shift is a common hidden reason a long-established plant suddenly starts scorching.
