Overview

Roma is the standard paste tomato, released by the USDA at Beltsville in 1955 from a Pan America, San Marzano, and Red Top lineage. The plant is a compact, erect determinate with good leaf cover, so a single stake or small cage is enough. Fruit is red, pear shaped, two and a half to three inches, thick fleshed and dry with few seeds, ideal for sauce and canning. Most of the crop ripens in a concentrated window over a few weeks. Resistant to Fusarium and Verticillium. About 75 to 80 days from transplant; keep watering even and mulch the bed to head off blossom-end rot.
