Overview
Rutgers was selected in 1934 at Rutgers University with the Campbell Soup Company from a Marglobe by J.T.D. cross, and for decades it was the reference American tomato for both processing and fresh markets. The open-pollinated fruit is red, five to eight ounces, a handsome flattened globe, unblemished, with the balanced sweet-acid flavor people call real tomato taste. Resistant to Fusarium, Alternaria stem canker, and gray leaf spot. Sources disagree on habit; the original selection is often listed as determinate while modern strains behave as indeterminates that benefit from staking. About 73 days from transplant.
