Overview
Viva Italia is a hybrid Roma-type paste tomato from Petoseed (1991) that took the Roma shape and flavor and added a wide resistance package, which is why it is so much more dependable than open-pollinated Roma in humid gardens. The elongated, bright red fruit weighs roughly 2 to 4 ounces, with thick walls, dense flesh and little juice, so it cooks down into sauce or paste quickly and dries well. Plants are determinate and compact, around 3 to 3.5 feet, and they ripen a heavy set over a few weeks, which suits batch canning. It also keeps setting fruit in hot weather. An All-America Selections winner, listed as resistant to Alternaria stem canker, gray leaf spot, bacterial speck, nematodes, Fusarium races 1 and 2, and Verticillium race 1.
