Overview

Anna Russian is an oxheart-type heirloom from Ukraine and Russia, easy to spot by its sparse, droopy foliage and the heart-shaped pink-red fruit that hangs in loose clusters of two or three. Fruit is very fleshy and nearly seedless, up to 12 ounces and sometimes a pound, with a rich, sweet, mild flavor best appreciated fresh. It is one of the earliest large-fruited heirlooms at about 68 to 80 days, which makes it useful in short-season gardens and in the South where an early harvest beats the summer heat. Vines are indeterminate and keep setting as long as heat does not stop them. Start seed 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, plant into deeply amended soil, and stake or cage firmly to hold the heavy hearts.
