Overview
Big Rainbow is an open-pollinated bicolor beefsteak heirloom from Minnesota, one of the showiest of its kind. The giant, ribbed, irregular fruit weighs a pound or more, often one to two pounds, with a golden-yellow to orange base color streaked and blushed with crimson; inside, gold flesh is mottled with red sectors in a pattern that differs from fruit to fruit. Flavor is very sweet, fruity and low in acid, comparable to Pineapple, though Big Rainbow tends to a deeper gold-orange background. Vines are indeterminate with regular leaves and need a long season, so start seed early, about 8 weeks before the last frost, and give them a strong cage or stake. Maturity is listed at about 80 to 85 days.
