Overview

Defiant PhR is a determinate slicing tomato bred by Randy Gardner at North Carolina State University with late blight as its main target. The plants carry the Ph-2 and Ph-3 genes and add resistance to Verticillium wilt race 1 and Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2, together with Septoria leaf spot and early blight tolerance, so foliage tends to stay green when neighboring tomatoes are collapsing in humid weather. Round, deep red fruit of roughly 6 to 8 ounces (about 175 g) has firm, meaty flesh and a classic flavor, and it ripens around 70 days from transplant, often ahead of the worst disease pressure. Bushes reach a bit over two feet and benefit from a cage. It also does well in large containers or hanging baskets.
