Overview
Porter is a Texas heirloom introduced by San Antonio's Porter & Sons seed company, dating to around 1900 and selected for heat, drought and alkaline soil that defeat most Eastern tomatoes. For generations it was the go-to garden tomato in Central and South Texas. Fruits are small to medium, about 4 ounces, deep pinkish-red and slightly oval, carried in clusters, and they resist both sunburn and cracking. The flavor concentrates under mild water stress. Indeterminate vines keep setting fruit through summer heat when other varieties stop blooming. It is an early paste-type, ripening around 65 days from transplant.
