Overview
Drott's Yellow is not a tomato at all but an heirloom ground cherry (Physalis pruinosa), grown much like one. The prostrate plants stand only 9 to 17 inches tall while sprawling 65 to 101 inches wide, with densely downy green leaves. They bear early and heavily: orange-yellow fruit under an ounce, mildly tart-sweet, each wrapped in a papery husk that goes from green to yellow to brown at maturity, just like a tomatillo. The Pilgrims used them for pies, jams and preserves, and they are good fresh too. About 70 days to maturity. Give it room to spread.
