Light is the condition, not a nice extra
Vandas flower on accumulated light. A plant given the gentle filtered light that suits a moth orchid will grow, hold its leaves and look perfectly presentable for years without ever producing a spike, and no amount of fertilizer, bloom booster or hopeful repositioning changes that. The strap-leaf types, the big flat-fan plants with long thick leaves, want the most light of any orchid in common cultivation, close to full sun with only the harshest midday hours softened.
The leaves are the meter. A vanda receiving enough light carries stiff, upright, mid to yellow-green leaves, often with a faint bronze or reddish cast on the surfaces facing the sun. Soft, floppy, deep glossy green leaves that arch downward are a shade plant, and a shade vanda does not bloom. Aim for the color of a green apple and accept that it looks slightly hungry compared with the deep green most people want.
Terete and semi-terete types, the ones with round pencil-like leaves, want more light still and will genuinely take full sun outdoors in summer once hardened to it. Broader strap-leaf plants and the smaller-flowered hybrids sit a step lower and are happier with light shade through the middle of the day. If your plant has round leaves and has never flowered indoors, the honest answer is that a window will rarely be enough.

Where the spike comes from and what it does
The flower spike emerges from a leaf axil on the stem, usually a few leaves down from the top, and it comes out looking almost exactly like a new root: a blunt green finger pushing sideways. The difference is direction and texture. A root emerges lower, is rounder and duller and heads down or outward; a spike is flatter, glossier, slightly grooved, and turns upward within a week or two. Do not snap off what you think is a stray root until you have watched it for ten days.
From that first sign to open flowers is usually six to ten weeks, depending on warmth. Once buds begin to swell, stop moving and turning the plant. Vandas orient their flowers to the light and will twist the whole spike if you rotate the basket midway, giving you a crooked inflorescence that faces the wall. Support a heavy spike with a soft tie to a thin cane so its own weight does not snap it at the base.
A mature strap-leaf plant in good conditions will typically produce two or three flowering cycles a year rather than one fixed season, because the trigger is accumulated light and steady growth rather than a date. A plant that flowers once and then nothing for two years is telling you the conditions supported one push and no more.
A spike appearing then stalling at an inch or two, staying green but not extending, nearly always means the plant is too cool. Vandas set buds well but need warmth to finish them. Move it somewhere with nights above 60F (16C) and it will usually restart.
Bud blast: buds that yellow and drop
Buds that form, swell partway and then yellow at the base and fall are a shock response, not a disease. The commonest triggers are a sudden drop in humidity, a cold draft from a window or door, a large swing in temperature over a single night, and letting the roots go dry for a day at the wrong moment. Ethylene from ripening fruit in the same room, and fumes from gas heaters, will do it as well.
The other bud killer is thrips. They rasp at the developing bud inside its casing, and the damage only becomes visible as the bud opens deformed, streaked and brown-edged, or aborts entirely. Tap a suspect spike over a sheet of white paper and look for slim dark specks that run. Treat as soon as you see them, because by the time the flowers open the damage is done.
Keep humidity above 60 percent and temperatures steady through the bud period and most blast disappears. If you must move a budded plant, move it once, to a spot with the same light and warmth, and do it in a single step rather than shuffling it around over several days.
Feeding a plant that is trying to bloom
Because a bare-root vanda holds no nutrients between waterings, flowering demand has to be met by frequency rather than strength. Keep the same weak solution at roughly a quarter label strength, but keep it coming at most waterings through the warm months. A plant fed heavily once a month and starved in between produces fewer, smaller flowers than one fed weakly and constantly, even when the monthly totals are identical.
Bloom-booster formulas with high phosphorus are widely sold and largely unnecessary. A balanced feed with adequate nitrogen builds the leaves and roots that support flowering; the light does the triggering. What does matter is calcium and magnesium, which many pure orchid fertilizers skip and which a bare-root plant cannot pull from any medium. A dilute dose of an appropriate supplement once a month, given separately from the main feed, keeps new leaves from emerging pleated and stunted.
Watch the newest leaf as your gauge. Each new leaf on a well-fed vanda should be as long as, or longer than, the one below it. Leaves getting progressively shorter down the seasons mean the plant is running at a deficit, and a plant at a deficit will not spend energy on flowers.
After the flowers, and what to note
Flowers last four to six weeks on the plant and longer in cool humid air. When the last one drops, cut the spike off close to the stem with a sterile blade, leaving a short stub rather than cutting into the stem tissue. Vanda spikes do not rebloom from the old stem, so there is nothing to be gained by leaving them. Let the stub dry and it will shrivel away on its own.
There is no rest period to enforce afterward. Keep watering and feeding exactly as before, because the plant will simply carry on growing leaves and, given enough light, set another spike from a higher axil in a few months. Cutting water after flowering, which is right for some other orchids, only sets a vanda back.
Write down the date the spike first appeared, which leaf axil it came from counting down from the top, how many days it took to open, how many flowers it carried and how long they lasted. Note where the plant was standing at the time and what the light was like. When a plant that flowered twice one year flowers not at all the next, that record is what tells you which of your conditions actually changed.
