Wheat Problems: Birds, Rust, Lodging and Sprouted Ears

A garden wheat bed has few pests, but birds will take the crop as it ripens and a wet spell at harvest can sprout the grain in the ear. Both are managed by timing rather than by spraying.

Birds are the main pest of a garden wheat bed

A field of wheat loses a trivial share of its grain to birds because the area is too large for them to make an impression. A bed of a few square yards is a different proposition: it is a concentrated, conspicuous, easily worked food source in an otherwise green garden, and sparrows, finches, pigeons and starlings will find it within a day or two of the grain reaching the milk stage. An unprotected home patch can lose most of its crop in the final fortnight, which is the fortnight in which you have already done all the work.

There are two vulnerable periods. The first is just after sowing, when grain under half an inch of soil is dug up, particularly in autumn when other food is scarce. The second and far more serious runs from milk stage to harvest, when birds strip the ears directly and work through the bed a little more each morning.

Netting is the only reliable answer at this scale. Scarers, tapes and reflective strips work for two or three days and are then ignored, which is why they always seem to work at first. Put netting up before the birds arrive, because a flock that has learned the bed is there will work much harder to get past it.

  1. Cover the bed for the first two weeks after sowing Row cover, netting or chicken wire laid flat on the soil is enough to stop grain being dug up. Take it off once shoots are an inch or two (3 to 5 cm) high and the birds lose interest entirely.
  2. Build a frame before the ears emerge Canes with bottle tops, hoops or a simple timber frame standing about a foot (30 cm) clear above the ears. Do it while you can still step into the bed without breaking stems, which means before heading, not after.
  3. Net over the frame, not over the crop Netting resting directly on the ears lets birds perch and feed straight through it. It must stand clear. Use fine mesh of half an inch (12 mm) or smaller so small finches cannot pass through it.
  4. Pin the netting down all the way round Bury the edge, weight it with bricks or peg it hard to the soil. Birds walk in under a loose edge and then cannot find their way out, which is bad for the crop and worse for the bird.
  5. Check the bed every morning during ripening Loose grain on the soil, stripped ear tips and bent stems all mean something is getting in. Two weeks of daily checks covers the entire risk period, after which the crop is cut and safe.

Diseases and the few insect pests

Wheat carries a long list of diseases in commercial production, but in a garden bed grown at low fertility with air moving through it, most either do not appear or arrive so late that the grain has already filled. Those that turn up are mostly fungal, encouraged by a dense overfed canopy, and not worth treating on a crop this size. The response is cultural: sow thinner, feed less, rotate, clear the debris.

Two things on this list do matter regardless of scale. Loose smut replaces the whole ear with black spore dust and spreads to healthy ears at flowering, so infected plants must be pulled and binned the moment you see them, ideally in a bag so the spores do not scatter. Ergot replaces individual grains with hard, dark, curved bodies noticeably larger than a kernel, and it is seriously toxic to people and animals. Any ear carrying it goes in the bin, and the batch it came from is not eaten, milled, saved for seed or fed to poultry.

Ergot is the one hazard here that is genuinely dangerous rather than merely disappointing. If you find hard dark bodies among the threshed grain, do not attempt to pick them out and use the rest. Discard the whole batch and do not save any of it for seed.

Lodging: the crop that goes flat

Lodging is a garden bed's most common failure and it is almost always self inflicted. Wheat grown in ground that has been generously composted for vegetables produces tall, soft, dark green straw with weak lower internodes, and the first summer storm that hits it while the ears are heavy lays the whole bed down in one night. Once flat it is hard to cut, dries unevenly, is found by slugs and mice, and if it is lying on wet soil the grain can sprout in the ear.

The fix is preventative and happens at sowing and at the spring feed. Grow wheat on the tail end of a bed's fertility rather than in freshly enriched ground, feed once at green-up or not at all, and widen the rows in rich soil. A stiff stand of thirty to thirty six inches (75 to 90 cm) of straw yields more than a lush four foot (1.2 m) stand that ends up horizontal.

If it does go down while the grain is still soft, gather sections by hand, tie them into standing sheaves against a stake and get the ears clear of the soil; filling will continue. If it goes down close to ripeness, cut it and finish it under cover rather than hoping it lifts, because it will not.

Sprouting in the ear, and grain that will not dry

A ripe crop standing through a run of warm, wet weather can germinate while still on the plant. You see it as pale root tips and tiny shoots emerging from grains in the ear, and the grain affected is finished for baking and for seed: the starch has already been converted, and flour from sprouted grain gives a sticky, poorly risen loaf. There is no treatment. The defense is to cut at hard dough rather than waiting for the crop to look completely finished, and to get it under cover the same day.

The related problem is a batch that never quite hardens. Grain stored at too high a moisture content molds in the jar, sometimes within a week, and a musty smell when you open the container means the whole batch goes out. Test by biting a kernel: dry grain shatters cleanly and sounds sharp, while grain that dents or feels leathery needs several more days spread in a shallow layer somewhere warm and airy before it is sealed away.

Both are weather problems a garden grower can largely design around, because at this scale the whole crop fits under a porch roof. That flexibility is the one real advantage a few square yards has over a field.

What to record when something goes wrong

Note the date you first saw damage and what stage the crop was at, not just what the problem was. Rust that appears after the grain has filled costs you nothing; the same rust three weeks earlier halves the yield, and only the date distinguishes them in hindsight.

For lodging, write down the straw height, what you fed and when, and the weather on the night it went down. For bird damage, note the date the ears reached milk stage and the date you first saw grain on the soil, since the gap between those two is how long you have to get netting up next year. Mark on a sketch of the bed where the damage started, because problems that begin in the same corner two seasons running are telling you something about shade, drainage or airflow rather than about luck.
