Overview
Sunburst is a hybrid pattypan that won All-America Selections recognition in 1985, and it is still the go-to yellow scallop squash. The compact bush bears glossy, bright yellow saucer-shaped fruit with scalloped edges, a small green button at the blossom end, and mild, buttery white flesh. Pick at 2 to 3 inches for the most tender fruit; skin toughens and flavor fades as it grows. Plants need no support, take up far less room than vining squash, and keep bearing through hot weather, which makes spring and fall plantings possible in warm climates. Essentially the same plant as Bennings Green Tint but in a consistent bright yellow. Sow 1 inch deep in warm, fertile soil after frost.
