Overview
Multipik (Joseph Harris, 1981) is a hybrid yellow straightneck whose trick is the precocious yellow gene: fruit colors bright yellow very early and stays that way even when the plant picks up cucumber mosaic virus, which would normally mottle the skin green. In aphid-heavy gardens that means the harvest still looks clean. The gene also makes plants highly female, so fruit set is heavy and continues over a long season. The bush is compact and open; pick the slender, smooth fruit at 5 to 6 inches and check daily at peak. A tell for the gene: the first true leaf comes up yellow in cool weather. Direct sow in warm soil after frost. Adapted to the Northeast and widely grown;
