The one decision that matters: which sucker stays
Once your banana is established, the rhizome pushes up new shoots continuously. Left alone, a clump becomes a thicket of eight or ten pseudostems, all sharing one root system, all competing, and none of them ever accumulating the reserves needed to flower. A crowded clump is the single most common reason a healthy-looking banana never fruits.
The discipline is simple and you apply it year-round. Allow one pseudostem to be the current fruiting stem, allow exactly one sucker to be its successor, and remove every other sucker as soon as it appears. Some growers run three generations at once in warm climates, which lets a clump crop more or less continuously; two is easier to manage and much easier to get right when you are learning.
Choose the successor by leaf shape, not by size. A sucker with narrow, blade-like leaves, often called a sword sucker, comes from deep in the rhizome and has its own strong root connection; it will grow into a full pseudostem and fruit properly. A sucker with broad, rounded leaves, a water sucker, is shallow-rooted and weak, and it will grow tall and thin and disappoint you. Keep the narrow-leaved one even if it is currently the smaller of the two.

How to remove a sucker without damaging the clump
Deal with unwanted suckers while they are small. A shoot under a foot (30 cm) tall is a two-minute job; one left until it is six feet (1.8 m) means cutting out a substantial stem and leaving a wet wound at the base of the clump.
- Cut it off at ground level Take the shoot off flush with the soil surface with a clean, sharp knife. Do not try to dig it out unless you want it as a new plant, because disturbing the rhizome around the fruiting stem sets that stem back.
- Destroy the growing point A sucker cut at ground level regrows within weeks. After cutting, push the knife point down into the center of the cut stump and twist, or gouge out the middle. That kills the growing point and the stump simply rots away.
- Do it in dry weather Cut suckers when the next day or two will be dry. A fresh cut at soil level in wet weather is an open invitation to the soft rots that get into banana rhizomes.
- Leave the leaves you removed in place Chopped sucker material can go straight on the mulch around the clump. It is high in potassium and it breaks down fast, and returning it is a meaningful part of feeding the planting.
Feeding: more than you think
A banana is one of the hungriest things you can grow in a garden. It is building a fifteen foot (4.5 m) plant and a bunch of fruit from a standing start in eighteen months, and it will only do that on generous, continuous feeding through the whole growing season. Underfeeding shows up as pale, small leaves and, eventually, a bunch of stubby fingers that never fill.
Potassium is the nutrient that matters most, and by a wide margin. Nitrogen builds the leaves and the pseudostem, so it is important early, but potassium is what fills the fruit. Use a balanced feed with a high potassium figure, or a dedicated fruit feed, and apply it little and often rather than in two big doses. Through the warm months, feed monthly at full rate, spread in a ring at the outer edge of the leaf canopy rather than against the stem.
Back the feeding off as the season cools and stop entirely once growth slows. Soft, nitrogen-rich tissue going into cold weather is exactly what rots. Resume when new leaves start unrolling again in spring.
Wood ash and comfrey are both worth using here; both are high in potassium and cheap, and a banana absorbs as much as you can reasonably give it during the growing season.
Water: constant, never standing
The banana's water need is unusual because it is high and continuous rather than deep and occasional. That vast leaf area transpires heavily on a hot day, and the roots are shallow enough that the top foot (30 cm) of soil is all the plant can reach. In summer heat, a mature clump wants the equivalent of an inch to an inch and a half (25 to 40 mm) of water a week, and more in dry wind.
The signal to watch for is the leaf. A banana under water stress folds its leaf halves upward along the midrib, closing like a book, and it does this before any wilting or yellowing appears. If you see that in the morning rather than only in the worst of the afternoon, water immediately and increase your frequency. Consistent moisture is what produces a full bunch; a plant that swings between soaked and bone dry sets fruit that stays small.
Keep the mulch layer topped up to four inches (10 cm) all season. On a shallow-rooted plant with this much water demand, mulch does more for you than any adjustment to your watering schedule.
Leaves, tidying and record keeping
Remove old leaves only once they are genuinely dead or hanging brown against the stem. Green leaf, even shredded green leaf, is still feeding the developing bunch, and stripping the plant to make it look neat directly costs you fruit size. Cut dead leaves off close to the pseudostem and use them as mulch.
Two records make a real difference over the years. Write down the date you selected each successor sucker and where it sat in the clump, because that lets you work out afterwards how long your clump actually takes from selection to flowering in your conditions. And log your feeding dates through the season; when a bunch comes in small, the feeding record almost always explains it, and memory almost never does.
